Brave Leader Series

Brave leaders inspire growth in people, organizations and markets

Hiro Mizuno '95

Executive Managing Director and Chief Investment Officer / Government Pension Investment Fund

Friday, September 27, 2019 / Kellogg Global Hub

When Hiro Mizuno ‘95 joined Japan’s $1.5 trillion Government Pension Investment Fund (GPIF) as Executive Managing Director and Chief Investment Officer in 2015, he was tasked with transforming the portfolio and building a team from scratch—no small task for the world’s largest pension fund.

Surprising many, Mizuno has focused not on “beating the market,” but rather on integrating ESG principles holistically to achieve long-term, sustainable returns to the fund. In doing so, he’s also broadened his focus to combat climate change, gender diversity issues, and more.

A strong proponent of artificial intelligence, Mizuno is pushing the industry to adopt AI technologies, to which he credits GPIF’s ability to promote long-term investing.

His fearless and innovative leadership—in the midst of global economic uncertainty—most recently has enabled the fund to grow by $2.4 billion in Q2 2019. In addition to board membership and academic engagements, he was awarded "Outstanding Individual Contribution" in RI (Responsible Investor), Innovation & Industry Leadership in 2017.

Learn more about Mizuno’s story, and what it takes to be a Brave Leader in this dynamic industry, on Friday, September 27.
