2013 McCormick Scholars announced

4/16/2012 - Kellogg students Carson Oliver ’12 and Daniel Ryan ’12 have been named the Kellogg School’s McCormick Scholars for 2013.

The scholars program is funded through a grant from the Chicago-based McCormick Foundation and honors students planning careers in media management. Oliver and Ryan will receive full tuition for three academic quarters at Kellogg. They were chosen after a rigorous application process by a panel of judges from media and academics.

“Carson and Daniel are outstanding choices for the scholars program,” said Michael Fishman, senior associate dean of curriculum and teaching at Kellogg and the Norman Strunk Professor of Financial Institutions. “Their experiences before coming to Kellogg and the work they have done here have prepared them to become leaders in the media industry. Each has shown the commitment and the passion to achieve that.”

Oliver and Ryan are both 2012 candidates in the JD-MBA program at Kellogg and Northwestern's School of Law.

Oliver previously worked as a consultant with Invotex Group and Navigant Consulting. At Invotex Group, he advised companies on the valuation and management of their intellectual property assets, and worked on a number of digital media cases. He has also worked at the UK-based record label Sanctuary. With the stipend that accompanies the scholarship, he intends to investigate crowd-funding as a mechanism to support news organizations and media entrepreneurs. Oliver is a graduate of the University of Virginia.

Before attending Kellogg, Ryan worked as a touring musician and litigation consultant based in Washington, D.C. He plans to use his stipend to analyze the potential legal, economic and journalistic impact of recent anti-piracy legislation, including the Stop Online Piracy Act and its proposed alternatives. He has a degree in economics from Princeton University."

“In a field of strong applicants, Carson and Dan impressed the selection committee with their rich experiences as well as their insightful proposals for research,” said Rebecca Baldwin, adviser to the scholars and a member of the selection committee.

The scholars program was created by the McCormick Foundation in 2005 to cultivate a new generation of leaders in media management. Over the course of the program, the foundation will grant 20 merit scholarships to Kellogg Media Management students.
