Accounting for Slavery: A Conversation with Caitlin Rosenthal

On November 2, 2022 Kellogg hosted the special event: Accounting for Slavery: A Conversation with Caitlin Rosenthal. Featuring the title  How the Word is Passed: A Reckoning with the History of Slavery Across America, One Book, One Northwestern, is a reading program with the goal of engaging the Northwestern community in a common conversation centered on a thought-provoking book. As part of that series the DRRC, along with the Management & Organizations Department of the Kellogg School of Management, hosted the event: Accounting for Slavery: A Conversation with Caitlin Rosenthal on November 2, 2022.

This event was generously sponsored by the Center for Economic History at the Weinberg College of Arts & Sciences, the Management & Organizations department and the Dispute Resolution Research Center at the Kellogg School of Management. During this event, economic historian Caitlin Rosenthal (UC Berkeley), gave remarks about her book Accounting for Slavery: Masters and Management, which shows how the development of modern management and accounting practices find their origins in slavery. These remarks were followed by a conversation between Dr. Rosenthal and faculty member Dr. Ivy Onyeador from Kellogg’s Management and Organizations Department, a question and answer session with the audience, and a reception with the speaker and the audience members.
