Methodological Advances in the Extraction and Analysis of Historical Data

Consumer finance and new technologies: research and practice

A conference sponsored by Explorations in Economic History

Friday, December 3rd, 2021

This Explorations in Economic History conference will highlight papers on new methodological tools for data creation, cleaning, and analysis.

Recent advances in traditional OCR, AI, machine learning, and computer vision, among other methods, are increasingly used to extract data from historical documents, transform these data into useable datasets, and analyze the resulting data. A more systematic discussion and distribution of these tools among economic historians would have broad-based benefits.

The conference will take place virtually on December 3rd, 2021. The keynote speaker will be Melissa Dell, Professor of Economics, Harvard University.
