In the Kellogg Datasets catalogue, you will see many platforms where we can host data. Below are the most common platforms with links that that contain instructions for accessing data on them.

AWS Athena

Athena is cloud-based platform where we host several large-scale datasets that can be accessed with a SQL query. You can either submit your query from inside a program that makes an ODBC connection to Athena or by using the interactive AWS Console. See KRS Athena Documentation for detailed instructions.

To request access to an Athena dataset, please contact rs@kellogg.northwestern.edu.

Redivis

Redivis is a cloud-based platform that offers advanced features for hosting data. For example, on Redivis it is possible to share data securely with researchers outside Northwestern, produce audit trails of files that have been accessed, and much more. Note: fees may apply to host data on Redivis.

Researchers can explore the data interactively in their web browser or query the data programmatically by running a program that calls the Redivis API. See KRS Redivis Documentation for detailed instructions.

WRDS

Wharton Research Data Services (WRDS) is a popular platform that hosts many of our commercially licensed datasets such as CRSP, Compustat, Pitchbook, and Revelio. These data are available to all current Northwestern faculty, staff, and students for academic use.

Researchers can explore the data interactively using the WRDS web interface or programmatically by running a program that remotely connects to the WRDS database servers. See KRS WRDS Documentation for more details.

To obtain a WRDS account, please visit their account registration page.

RDSS Audited

Research Data Storage Service (RDSS) is a service provided by Northwestern IT. The RDSS Audited Zone is one option for storing research data that is subject to strict security regulations, such as HIPAA. Note: Storage fees will apply.

Nightingale

NU@Nightingale is another option for hosting research data with strict security regulations. Researchers who store data on Nightingale also have access to a secure high-performance computing cluster that is managed by NCSA at the University of Illinois. Note: fees will apply to use the Nightingale service.
