The DRRC held the Teach the Teacher Program: Approaches to Negotiation Education in downtown Chicago in summer 2024. This program was designed to help negotiation instructors in their efforts to build course content, lead enriching debrief sessions, engage with students, teach complex issues, and utilize technological advances. Attendees learned best practices and ideas for implementing learnings into their courses. We welcomed faculty members, postdoctoral fellows, and PhD students who teach negotiations.

Agenda

Welcome, Introductions, and Conference Overview
Cynthia Wang, Clinical Professor of Management & Organizations, Kellogg School of Management, and Executive Director, Dispute Resolution Research Center
Lucy Montgomery, Senior Manager of Case Writing, Dispute Resolution Research Center

Teaching with Role-Playing Exercises: Earth
Max H. Bazerman, Jesse Isidor Straus Professor of Business Administration, Harvard Business School

Instructors learned how to teach an important and difficult negotiation challenge — climate change. This multi-party environmental negotiation teaches students how to better appreciate the real challenges in bringing diverse parties together to respond to this important threat.

Utilizing Technological Innovations to Analyze In-Class Exercises
William Brady, Assistant Professor of Management & Organizations, Kellogg School of Management

This session focused on how technology can play a crucial role in enhancing the effectiveness and efficiency of in-class exercises. Specifically, we demonstrated how to use R programming language to build simple, automated scripts that help gain rapid, customizable insights into student performance, engagement and comprehension.

Teaching with Case Discussions: English Premier League
Nour Kteily, Professor of Management & Organizations, Kellogg School of Management, and Co-Director, Dispute Resolution Research Center

This session featured a live case debrief of Project Restart, which examines the complex negotiations to restart the coronavirus-disrupted 2020 English Premier League soccer season. After demonstrating how he debriefs the case, Prof. Kteily moderated a conversation about best practices for teaching negotiation using cases (versus negotiation exercises).

Enriching Class Debriefs
Eli Finkel, Professor of Psychology, Weinberg College of Arts & Sciences, and Professor of Management & Organizations, Kellogg School of Management

This session had two components:
Using extra credit assignments to make the class better focused on
keeping your examples fresh by having students identify real-world examples or video clips.
Bringing personal examples into the classroom addressed when and how to incorporate your own negotiation successes and failures into the course.
