The advent of generative AI marks a paradigm shift in leadership and for many, a “shock” to the leadership mindset. This chapter delves into how leaders’ emotional, cognitive, and behavioral responsiveness with regard to generative AI affects team morale, decision-making, and performance. We explore the potential for leaders to either excel (thrive) or struggle (wither) amidst the novel leadership challenges that AI poses. Our inquiry centers on the perception and impact of generative AI, steering clear of its technical complexities. Thus, our focus is not on the technical or computational intricacies of AI, but rather on how the adoption and inclusion of generative AI affect the emotions, cognitions, and behaviors of leaders and their teams, particularly with respect to decision-making. By examining and understanding the human experience of relationships with AI, leaders can better navigate its integration, thereby enhancing team performance, communication efficacy, and organizational effectiveness.
