The human and capital investments in U.S. biomedical science enterprise has over the past twenty-five years created new biology based therapies to diagnose and treat disease, and concurrently created an industry destined for significant economic growth this decade and beyond.
Scientific undertakings in public and private laboratories nationwide have been transformed into a sophisticated partnership between government, universities, and the biotechnology industry to move science from the laboratory and hospitals and clinics to improve patient care.
This report describes the developments that aided in the creation of this national public/private partnership, and the strategies for future initiatives during a period of intense international competition to capture biotechnology.
