Jean Tirole
About the speaker
Jean Tirole is the chairman of the Jean-Jacques Laffont Foundation/ Toulouse School of Economics and the scientific director of the Institute for Industrial Economics at the University of Toulouse, where he has been teaching since 1991.
He holds engineering degrees from the Ecole Polytechnique and the Ecole Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées, and a Doctorat in decision mathematics from the University Paris IX.
In 1981 he received a PhD in Economics from MIT, where he served as a professor of economics before taking his position at Toulouse. Tirole’s research covers industrial organization, regulation, game theory, banking and finance, psychology and economics, international finance and macroeconomics.
He has authored more than 200 scientific articles in economics and finance, and 10 leading books on industrial organization, game theory and finance.
Tirole is the recipient of many honors, including six honorary doctorates from European and North American universities, as well as major prizes, medals and fellowships from leading European and international organizations. He is a foreign honorary member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences as well as the American Economic Association, and was elected to Allais’ chair at the French Academie des Sciences Morales et Politiques. He has served as president of the Econometric Society and the European Economic Association.
