Recognizing the importance of effective communication, the Litowitz Center for Enlightened Disagreement engages Northwestern undergraduates to promote skills and mindsets for connecting meaningfully across difference. The Litowitz Center’s curriculum pillar is currently comprised of two main initiatives.

Residential Program in Enlightened Disagreement

The Litowitz Center, in partnership with the Division of Student Affairs, delivers a year-long, co-curricular program for undergraduate students that leverages research-backed approaches to cultivating open-mindedness, identifying one’s own cognitive biases, working collaboratively with others despite disagreement and more.

First-Year Seminars

To infuse enlightened disagreement directly into the curriculum, the Litowitz Center provides faculty teaching Weinberg College first-year seminars, enrolling over 1,000 new students annually, with classroom activities to advance multiple course learning goals that align to the Center’s mission.

Common Reading

Each year, the Litowitz Center will sponsor a common reading experience for the Northwestern community. While subjects and genres may vary from year to year, all common readings will relate to the Center’s mission.
