Disruption in Healthcare

Healthcare is a wide and varied industry. In this session, attendees will hear a variety of perspectives on the presence of and struggle for disruption in the healthcare field. The discussion will cover factors that are driving changes in the healthcare industry, the current pace of disruption in the field and why it is slow compared to many other industries, and areas that are ripe for further advancements and disruption.

Craig Garthwaite Associate Professor of Strategy, Herman Smith Research Professor in Hospital and Health Services Management, Kellogg School of Management / Faculty Director, Health Enterprise Management Program

Craig Garthwaite is an associate professor of strategy and the director of Kellogg's Health Enterprise Management Program. He is an applied microeconomist whose research examines the effects of government policies and social phenomena with a focus on health and biopharmaceutical sectors. He has appeared as a guest on various television and radio shows such as Nightly Business Report and NPR Marketplace, and has testified before the United States House of Representatives and several state legislatures on matters related to the minimum wage and healthcare reforms.

Anna Haghgooie Managing Director, Sandbox Industries

Anna Haghgooie is a managing director of Sandbox Industries, a Chicago-based venture capital firm focused on implementing innovation by connecting established corporations with innovative startups and entrepreneurs. She focuses on investing in healthcare innovation through the BlueCross BlueShield Venture Funds, a collaborative investment platform with more than $550 million in capital and over 30 Blue Plans participating. She earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan and a MBA with honors from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. Haghgooie is a Fellow in the Health Innovators Fellowship at the Aspen Institute and was named to the Crain’s Tech 50 list in 2017.

Griffin Myers is a board-certified physician and the chief medical officer and co-founder of Oak Street Health, a growing organization of value-based primary​ ​care​ ​centers​ ​serving​ ​adults​ ​on​ ​Medicare. Meyers is responsible for the excellence of healthcare delivery at Oak Street Health and has been instrumental in guiding the ​company’s​ growth into additional markets and developing an innovative care model. Myers​ ​has​ ​an​ ​MBA​ ​from​ ​the​ ​University​ ​of​ ​Chicago Booth​ ​School​ ​of​ ​Business ​and​​ ​an​ ​MD​ ​from​ ​the​ ​University​ ​of​ ​Chicago​ ​Pritzker​ ​School​ ​of Medicine. He​ ​is​ ​a​ ​diplomate​ ​of​ ​the​ ​American​ ​Board​ ​of​ ​Emergency​ ​Medicine​, an ​adjunct instructor​ ​of​ emergency​ medicine​ ​at​ ​Northwestern​ ​University’s​ ​Feinberg​ ​School​ ​of​ ​Medicine and​ ​a​ ​Presidential​ ​Leadership​ ​Scholar.

Edward Segel Senior Vice President, Business, Oscar Health Insurance

Edward Segel serves on the executive team at Oscar Health Insurance as senior vice president of business. He is responsible for strategic planning and insurance product design. As part of Oscar's founding team, he served as vice president of product for the company’s first four years, leading digital products and design. Previously he conducted economic research for Bridgewater Associates and data visualization consulting at Bloomberg LP. He holds an undergraduate degree from Harvard University, and an MS in symbolic systems and MBA from Stanford University.
