Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) trains and busses to the city and PACE busses suburbs are easily accessible from and near campus. For information on the train and bus schedules, fares and maps, please refer to the CTA Web Page and the PACE web page

Northwestern Shuttles

All employees and students may ride the inter-campus shuttle at no charge by displaying an active WildCard ID to the driver. The complete schedule is available at http://www.northwestern.edu/uservices/transportation/shuttles.  

Schedules for other shuttles, such as the Shop 'N' Ride shuttle and Frost Bite Express may also be found on this site.  Please note that bus schedules vary by quarter.

Rides to the Airport

A variety of transportation resources are available to get to Chicago's airports including shuttles, bus, and train.  For specific information, please refer to the Purple Pages. RideShare is also an option. Students may also use the Kellogg Cab Share application.

SafeRide provides free escorted rides to and from campus and nearby housing.

Student Parking Permits

Permit Rates

Daily permits cost $9.00 for visitors, faculty, staff, and students. Daily permits are non-refundable.

Annual Permits (rates effective October 1, 2025)
Annual permits start October 1 and expire September 30 of the following year.

  • Student Commuter (annual): $648.00
    The rate decreases by $54.00 each month after October. These are billed to your student account.
  • Student Commuter 9 month (academic year): $540.00
    Expires the day after Commencement. The rate decreases by $60.00 each month after October. These are billed to your student account.
  • Residential Student (annual): $648.00
    The rate decreases by $54.00 each month after October. These are billed to your student account.
  • Residential Student 9 month (academic year): $540.00
    Expires the day after Commencement. The rate decreases by $60.00 each month after October. These are billed to your student account.

Parking on campus is very limited. Students are encouraged to walk, bike, or take public transportation rather than bring a car to campus.

Students requesting a parking exemption for medical reasons must possess valid handicapped registration. Students with handicapped license plates or placards must purchase a main campus parking permit.

Eligibility

Students with senior standing or above who live on campus are eligible for parking permits. All graduate and commuting students who live outside of the walking zone are also eligible. Chicago campus students are eligible if they have Evanston campus classes during enforcement hours (subject to verification by class schedule).

Persons who are not eligible for main campus permits include:

  • All freshman, sophomores, and juniors who reside on campus.
  • All students with non-appealable, unpaid violation assessments.
  • Students living in non-university housing within the designated walking zone.

Permit types

  • Commuter (C)
    Available to all eligible commuting students living outside of the walking zone.
  • Commuter Carpool (CP)
    Available to all eligible commuting students living outside of the walking zone who are in a carpool or for those with two cars. Only two vehicles may be registered with a CP permit, and only one may park on campus at a time. The carpool hang tag must be displayed in the vehicle that is parked on campus.
  • Resident (R)
    Available to eligible students living on-campus with senior or above class standing. Any student who maintains a campus address is considered a resident for parking purposes.
  • Ryan Field (D)
    Available to all eligible students for reduced cost parking at Ryan Field. A free shuttle is provided. See the Ryan Field Permits page for more information. Student athletes interested in Ryan Field Athletic Department parking should also review Ryan Field Permits and contact the Athletic Department.
  • Motorcycle/Scooter/Moped (M)
    Available to all eligible students with a registered motorcycle, scooter or moped on the Evanston campus. Required for all licensable motorcycles, scooters and mopeds. There is no charge for a motorcycle/scooter/moped permit for individuals who have purchased an annual main campus parking permit. The vehicle and the motorcycle/scooter/moped may not be parked on campus simultaneously.

How to obtain

Permits must be purchased in person at the Evanston Parking Office. Students must be registered for classes prior to purchasing a parking permit. Students are required to present a valid Wildcard, driver’s license, vehicle registration*, and current housing contract, lease, or other acceptable proof of local address*.

Students who provide false information are subject to referral to Student Affairs, loss of any future permit privileges, forfeiture of permit fee, and may be subject to criminal charges. An additional fine may be assessed for a fraudulently obtained permit.

Transportation & Parking reserves the right to request additional documentation to verify address, affiliation, vehicle registration, or any other information. Transportation & Parking has the authority to deny or revoke parking privileges.

*not required for Ryan Field "D" permits.


Visitor Parking Permits

Speakers and other visitors may park in the north parking garage at 2311 N. Campus Drive.  For a map showing all of the lots where guest parking passes may be used, please refer to the Parking Office site. 

Daily visitor parking permit: $9.00

Visitors and guests need a permit if they plan to park on campus Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Visitor permits are non-refundable. Use of visitor permits is prohibited by faculty, staff, and students.

Non-affiliated visitors with handicapped license plates or placards from a government agency may park in designated handicapped spaces or at parking meters at no charge. University parking permits are required in non-handicapped spaces.

How to obtain

  • Individuals may purchase visitor permits at the Evanston Parking Office, or pay the daily rate at pay stations located in the North and South Parking Garages.
  • University departments may purchase visitor permits by filling out the Departmental Visitor Permit Request form. Departments are limited to 30 permits per quarter or a quantity determined by Transportation & Parking by available space.
