Overview

Undergraduate Fellows are paid student leaders who support the Litowitz Center for Enlightened Disagreement’s curriculum and outreach pillars. After building foundational skills and knowledge in the residential certificate program, Undergraduate Fellows contribute to learning and community-building for future program participants. They also advance other core initiatives and represent the Center to diverse audiences. Through their work with the Litowitz Center and their special access to Center opportunities, Undergraduate Fellows hone skills and make connections relevant to pursuits at Northwestern and beyond.

Responsibilities

All Undergraduate Fellows assist in implementation of the residential certificate program through facilitation of module sessions and community-building within their student cohort. Fellows attend planning meetings for all program modules, assist lead facilitators at module sessions, and participate in post-module debriefs. In between sessions, Undergraduate Fellows host informal get-togethers for their student cohort and create content for cohort newsletters.

Beyond the residential program, Undergraduate Fellows lend support and vital student voices to other Litowitz Center work. For example, they help organize events, develop communications, and select a book for the Campus Reading Program. Undergraduate Fellows also serve as authentic student ambassadors for priority audiences, such as admitted students and alumni. Center staff seek to match Undergraduate Fellows' skills and interests with these collateral portfolios.

Fellowship benefits

Leadership and facilitation skills
Undergraduate Fellows gain experience creating meaningful learning environments and fostering community for participants in the Litowitz Center's residential program. Through session planning, event coordination, and mentorship from Center staff, Undergraduate Fellows develop skills that translate across academic, professional, and civic settings.
Abilities in communication and perspective-taking
Through deeper investment in the Litowitz Center's mission and consistent involvement with a cohort of residential program participants, Undergraduate Fellows become more thoughtful communicators who can engage across difference with curiosity, empathy, and intellectual humility.
Access to special events and networking
Undergraduate Fellows enjoy expanded opportunities to engage in the life of the Litowitz Center, including research conferences, alumni and donor events, faculty and guest talks, and more. These experiences connect students with faculty, university leaders, and visiting dignitaries in the context of enlightened disagreement.
Role in shaping Northwestern's culture of dialogue
Over multiple years, Undergraduate Fellows will participate in and make tangible contributions to an emerging campus culture grounded in enlightened disagreement. Beyond the credentials of a Kellogg-sponsored certificate and employment with the Litowitz Center, Undergraduate Fellows will pursue opportunities beyond Northwestern with specific accomplishments to showcase and strong references from the Center's leadership.

Made possible by the Feldman family

The Undergraduate Fellowship program is supported by a generous gift by Matt and Ellen Feldman.
We are pleased to support the Litowitz Center for Enlightened Disagreement Fellowship program because educating NU undergraduates to entertain differing perspectives and seek common ground is important to their individual success and to our society as a whole.
