The Leadership Game Survey

The survey has to be completed by August 13^th. All 1Y MBA the students will receive an individualized email with a link to an electronic survey. The survey contains several questions aimed at eliciting preferences and attitudes. The survey contains standard questions in psychology and economics and also some demographic characteristics that measure the educational and family background.

Please do not discuss the questions with anyone until August 13th. You will be receiving an email with more instructions later on in the quarter.

1) CONTENT

Can you be more specific about the content of the survey?

I do not want to be more specific (at this point) not to influence your answers. By and large there are no right and wrong answers in the survey. We ask you to answer as truthfully as possible. Not to be too obvious, there are also some filler questions in the survey. There are also some questions that might appear strange, but are not necessarily filler. The best strategy to get a more precise assessment of your characteristics is not to try to second guess and answer the survey in the most truthful way as possible.

In a few cases (we think) there are right and wrong answer, but you should relax because there is no penalty (for once) for wrong answers. Your answers in this test will never be revealed to anyone and will have no effect on any other classes. However, we ask you to try your best anyway.

I will happily discuss the content of the survey in the wrap-up lunch on August 20th.

2) CONSENT

Is participation in the survey and in the study mandatory?

No. Participation in the survey and in the Leadership Game is not mandatory. At the beginning of the survey, you will be asked for your consent to release the data for research and analysis (in order to receive your personalized feedback, we need to analyze the data). Participation in the LEADERSHIP GAME SESSION is not mandatory. At the beginning of the game session you will be required to sign the consent forms and you may decide whether to consent or not.

If I consent to release data for the survey, do I automatically consent to release the other data collected in this study?

No. Recall that when you consent, you are consenting to release only the data of the survey. You can later on decide whether to release the data for the remaining part of the study. Separate consent forms will be handed to you during the LEADERSHIP GAME SESSION.

If I do not consent to release data for the survey, and then I change my mind, because I realize that I want my individualized feedback from you, can I reverse my decision?

No. Unfortunately, you can not reverse this decision. If you decide not to consent, we can not provide you with individualized information and you can not reverse your decision.

If I consent and then change my mind, can I withdraw from the study?

Yes. You are free to withdraw at any time. At any time in the future, including after your graduation from Kellogg, you can withdraw from the study or portions of it by contacting Paola Sapienza through her e-mail Paola-Sapienza@northwestern.edu

If I decide not to consent, can I still receive my personalized feedback?

No. If you decide not to consent, we can not, by law, analyze your data and need to discard them. Thus, we cannot give you any personalized feedback.

If I decide not to consent, do I still get paid depending on my performance in the games?

Yes. You will be paid at the end of the LEADERSHIP GAME SESSION, depending on your decisions, whether or not you consent or not.

3) TECHNICAL PROBLEMS WITH THE SURVEY

I did not receive an invitation via email with the link to the survey.

We will sent the invitation to the entire class via e-mail later in the quarter.

I am trying to access the survey by following the link in the e-mail and I can not.

Most likely you may have your browser not set up to enable cookies. To enable cookies, follow the instructions below for the browser version you are using.

•     Go to the "Tools" menu.

•     Select "Options".

•     Select the "Privacy" icon.

•     Select the “Cookies” tab.

•     Check the box corresponding to "Allow sites to set cookies".

•     Click "OK" to save changes.

Mozilla Firefox (1.0 or earlier - On Linux)

•     Go to the "Edit" menu.

•     Select "Preferences".

•     Select the "Privacy" icon from the left panel.

•     Expand the “Cookies” tab.

At the beginning of the survey, I clicked on the initial consent form and nothing happened

Do I have to do the survey in an uninterrupted fashion?

No. You can interrupt it at any moment and resume it where you were as long as you access it by clicking the link in your e-mail. 

Can I go back and change my answers?

No. In order to allow you to take the survey in pieces, the answers are permanently stored after you press continue. It is not possible to go back with the browser to a previous page. If you go back you will receive an error message. If this happens see below.

I pressed the go back button and the survey has disappeared. What do I do now?

It is not possible to go back with the browser to a previous page. If you go back you receive a message like “YOUR PAGE AS EXPIRED”. Go back to your original page and refresh by clicking the refresh button. The survey should restart were it was before. If not, do not panic. Close the browser and re-access the survey, by clicking the link in your e-mail.

The study has been sponsored by the John Templeton Foundation and the Zell Center for Risk Research. These foundations are interested in financing groundbreaking research on business education.
