Oil Drilling Simulation

To complete the oil drilling simulation, you will answer a series of questions through the webpage. The webpages will ask you whether you would like to buy the project (the land). You will click on the yes or no button. The next set of pages will ask you whether you would like to invest (drill wells on the land). Again, you will click yes or no. Before you complete this assignment, be sure you have read the full instructions for the assignment which are in your packet.

Connecting to Kellogg and VPN (Read before the last minute)

To complete the assignment, you will run a program on the web. The program lives on a secure server at Kellogg. Although you can complete the assignment from anywhere in the world. However, if you are not physically on campus when you complete the assignment, you will need to VPN into the Kellogg network before starting the assignment. You should have VPN installed on your computers. If you do not, you can go here for instructions on installing VPN, configuring VPN, and then connecting. If VPN is not turned on, your web browser will not be able to find the computer. You may get an error message like "Opps [your web browser] could not connect to skew5.kellogg.northwestern.edu." To test that the program will run, before you need to, you can click on the link at the bottom of the page (you can do this even if you are not ready to complete the assignment. If you see a screen that looks like this, then your computer is set up correctly.

Finally, before you begin, a few last reminders:

  1. You should complete the assignment two times (extra times are ok, but do not count).
  2. Enter your 7 digit ID number and netid very carefully. I will use the 7 digit ID number to link your two sets of answers, so enter the same number for both or your trials. The computer will mail your answers to the email address you enter. Make sure it is correct.
  3. Do not use the back key. If you try to go back, it will crash the simulation. As in life, you can't undo decisions you have already made.
  4. After you complete all 18 cases, a summary of your investments will be displayed. A copy of the summary will be e-mailed to you automatically. You should keep a copy until I have posted the scores.
