PTMBA Core Course Waivers for Students in Traditional Program

Waiver Applications and Exams

Students in the traditional program who have completed prior relevant coursework may consider waiving core courses. Waivers allow students to take more electives but do not reduce the total number of courses a student must take to obtain the degree; all students in the traditional program must complete 20.5 credits. Waivers are obtained either by application or exam (see below for the availability and method of waiver by core course). Waiver exams can be taken only once and the waiver must be obtained prior to attending the first class of the intended waived course. A student may decline a partial or full waiver received by application or exam, but should contact the PTMBA Registrar to do so. Finance II (FINC 441) and Research Methods in Marketing (MKTG 450) are also eligible for waivers; for more information contact Carol Lucido.

Note: Accelerated Option Students are not able to waive core courses.

Waivers Granted:
  1. Partial Waiver allows the student to substitute the core course in a particular field with a higher level elective course in that same field at Kellogg.
  2. Full Waiver allows the student to substitute the core course in a particular field with a higher level elective from any field offered at Kellogg.

Waiver Applications and Exams

Waiver Applications (i.e. transcript reviews) are submitted to the departments once each quarter so applications must be complete by the dates in the table below. If you do not receive a waiver from your submitted application, you may sit for the waiver exam in a subsequent quarter (if an exam is offered for that course). Detailed instructions on how to apply for a waiver through transcript review are shown in the section below.

Waiver exams are offered once each quarter on a Friday evening from 6:00-9:00pm and a Saturday morning from 9:00am-12:00pm in Wieboldt Hall (see table below for dates). Waiver exam registration is required to sit for an exam and is done through KelloggGroups. Signup can occur by directly accessing the event on KelloggGroups or through a link sent via email (or in eNews) early in the quarter. You do not need any to submit any supporting documents to take the waiver exams. Approximately two weeks after you take the waiver exam, the results will be emailed to you, and then will be viewable online.

Waiver Application Instructions

Please complete the following steps:

  1. Register and confirm that you have met the requirements for a waiver application by completing the Core Course Waiver by Application survey
  2. Complete and sign an application form
  3. Obtain a copy of your transcripts (unofficial is fine) with the relevant course highlighted, syllabus/syllabi for the relevant course(s), and any supporting documents (e.g. CPA certification).
  4. After completing the online application survey, email the application form, transcript, syllabus/syllabi, and any other supporting documentation to Carol Lucido. Make sure that each attachment emailed is clearly labeled with your name and which document it is. If submitting more than one application, email each complete application separately. Applications will be submitted to departments for approval soon after the application deadline.

Shortly after your waiver results are emailed to you, they will also be viewable online.
