Kellogg School of Management, Booth School of Business and Corporate Leadership Center to Partner on Enhanced Offering

October 9, 2013-After providing nine years of distinguished executive leadership development, CEO Perspectives—a joint program between Corporate Leadership Center and Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management— will welcome the University of Chicago Booth School of Business to the partnership, beginning in 2014.

CEO Perspectives is a unique leadership experience focused on the CEO agenda for top executives of major companies. Since 2005, almost 200 executives have been nominated by their CEOs or Board Chairs to be program Fellows.  More than 60 leading CEOs have spoken at program events, more than 50 companies are corporate sponsors and 12 percent of Fellows have become CEOs. 

“This first-ever partnership involving both Kellogg and Chicago Booth in executive leadership development will create a complementary and unmatched academic powerhouse, bringing program Fellows cutting-edge business and leadership frameworks and creating a model of academic collaboration,” said Kellogg Dean Sally Blount and Booth Dean Sunil Kumar.

Corporate Leadership Center was co-founded in 2002 by Sheila Penrose and Cheryl Francis, who drew on successful executive careers, public company and civic board service and strong connections with academic institutions and business leaders to create and deliver CEO Perspectives. 

“It has always been our vision to draw on the academic talent of Chicago’s two world-class business schools,” said Ms. Penrose and Ms. Francis. “As CEO Perspectives enters an enhanced future, we are excited about the enriched program and the increased opportunities we will be able to provide as that vision is realized.”

During the program’s initial years, Kellogg served as an incubator for Corporate Leadership Center, and subsequently as its academic partner, providing insights from its study of executive leadership.

Kellogg’s Daniel Diermeier, IBM Professor of Regulation and Competitive Practice, will continue as Academic Director for the program, a role he has played since 2005.  Professor Diermeier will be joined by an Academic Co-Director from Booth who will be appointed shortly. Erin McInerney will continue to serve as Executive Director, coordinating the program and networking events.

Rick Waddell, Chairman and CEO of Northern Trust, and John Edwardson, Retired Chairman and CEO of CDW Corporation, who chair the Dean’s Advisory Councils at Kellogg and Booth respectively, will join the CEO Perspectives Board.


Corporate Leadership Center was founded in 2002 by Sheila Penrose and Cheryl Francis, whose experience and insight in executive management, board governance and business education roles prompted their decision to launch the Center, to bring together the best of the corporate and academic worlds in a collaborative partnership.

Corporate Leadership Center offers two leadership development programs: CEO Perspectives and Leading Women Executives.

Background on CEO Perspectives:

  • Offered exclusively to management committee level and/or C-Suite executives.
  • Participants must be nominated by their firm’s CEO or Board Chair.
  • The program includes presentations and insight from CEOs from participating companies and other CEOs at Fortune 500 companies.
  • CEO Perspectives is constructed around six two-day modules. Each module is based on an issue, decision, or responsibility on the CEO Agenda.
  • Fellows rate the program very highly, with 96 percent recommending the experience to other companies and executives. 
  • Most company sponsors have used CEO Perspectives multiple times to develop their senior executives.
  • The program has a national reach: more than one-third of participants have come from companies headquartered outside of Illinois.
