1997

Steve Carlson married Ifen Sung (both '97) in October 2000.

As I write this column, we reel from the events of Sept. 11 and recoil at the magnitude of senseless human loss and devastation. Some of us have been touched personally by loss of family or loved one. All of us have been affected both at work and at home as the realities of these events have come into clearer focus. The one thing I have been impressed by is the supportiveness of our class and the Kellogg community. The outpouring of concern has been tremendous and is, most likely, what will get us through this tragedy.

As some of you know, this is my last column for a while. Thank you for allowing me to keep us in touch. I have enjoyed the role immensely. Thank you also to those of you who offered to step in and continue the work. Brenda Brown will be taking over for the next few issues. Please watch for a message from her. Now, on to the news.

Tim Moran, while at a wedding for Kelloggians Kevin Hoffman and Beth Weber, continued to build his acting career as a guest on the upcoming “Real World Chicago” show on MTV a black-tie event at the Crystal Ballroom on Chicago’s Navy Pier.

Brenda Brown was married in Lake Tahoe on Aug. 4 to Eric Boime. There were many Kellogians in attendance: Debbie Bernstein, Brian Bohlig ’96, Tami Bohlig, KC Buckley, Steve and Ifen Carlson, Frank Cardello, John DeSmet ’96, Pat Flanagan, Jennifer Fox, Grant and Lara Gund, Wayne Hill, Kevin Hoffman, Mark Holmstrom, Sadhana Joliet, Katy Keim, Brad Marks, Steve Marshall, Barbara McCollister, John McWeeny, Alex and Christy Moorhead, Anne Raveret, Sal Saglimbeni, Abby Scott, Jason Spievak ’98, Greg Stone, Mike Stone, Jennifer Strom, Todd Tracey, Beth Weber and Kurt Weinsheimer. Brenda also convinced her husband, a native Californian, to move back with her to Minneapolis (her hometown). They are enjoying their new house and spending time with Brenda’s family.

Yon Makino successfully tested for his first-degree black belt in Aikido. His wife Elizabeth bought a thousand dollar digital Sony video camera to record the whole event. Now that’s true love! Yon and Elizabeth are happily residing in Phoenix, Ariz.

Tracey, Emilie, and Guillaume Darrousez moved from London to Paris in September. Guillaume will work as director of development for DARTY (part of Kingfisher Group), the number one electrical retailer in France. He will be in charge of developing new store formats, new sources of revenue, new merchandising and e-commerce sales. He will also have to build customer relationship management tools.

Emilie is now 15-months-old and talks a few words of English and French. So both parents are happy. She may be able to pick some Italian when she goes to Corrado Giaquinto’s wedding in September in Napoli.

Tracey is doing well, has now stopped working to take care of Emilie and enjoy the French lifestyle, i.e. good food and good wine! Their new address is: 63 rue Manessier, 94130 Nogent S/Marne.

Chuck Smith and his wife Lora had their first child, Hanna Elizabeth, on Aug. 11. Chuck continues to work for Lafarge Corporation where he took a new position as vice president of operations, Great Lakes Division, this past March.

Beau Beck and his wife Kimberly have yet another addition to their family. Lily Grace was born on March 31. She joins brothers Christian, 5, and Harrison, 3. Beau still works for Akamai Technologies in San Diego and can be reached at kimberlyandbeau@yahoo.com.

Jun Kawana writes: “Recently I transferred to Tokio Telecommunication Network Company, which is one of new common carriers in Japan. As manager of procurement department, I am searching for quality and price-competitive telecommunication device suppliers worldwide and welcome any information at Kawana.jun@tepco.co.jp.

Michael Teh is now a credit card special offer arbitrageur and is still traveling around the world on indefinite LWOP from his Boston start-ups. (So potential travel buddies, drop him a line at michaelteh2001@yahoo.com). While everyone else is working, getting married and having babies, at the time of writing, he was planning his third trip to Ibiza for the closing parties. However, rising debt may force him to return to work in the new year, and he’s considering “rock star,” “movie star” or “yoga instructor” as his post-consulting, banking and start-up career.

Drew Quartapella recently resigned from Bowles Hollowell Conner & Co./First Union to form Edgeview Partners. Edgeview is an investment banking boutique focused on middle market mergers and acquisitions and financings. Drew is a partner at the firm and is joined by four other professionals from the former BHC. Edgeview officially opened for business in August after a busy summer of planning and marketing. The firm is located in Charlotte, N.C. Drew can be reached at quartapella@edgeviewpartners.com or 704.602.3902. (Meanwhile, back at the ranch, Beth, Michael and Nicholas are doing great!)

Lynne Haywood started a new job at Advocate’s Health Centers as director of process improvement.

Anne Raveret has made a career switch from marketing into executive recruiting. In August, Anne joined Patch & Associates, a boutique executive recruiting firm in San Francisco specializing in marketing (Marcom & Product), public relations and sales recruiting. While it’s been a big change, Anne is enjoying the new role and is glad she can leverage her marketing background in a whole new way. Also, the job has put her back in touch with a lot of ’97 folks

John Ganz reports a career change. After four years in brand management at Colgate-Palmolive, he switched to public relations. In October, he joined the Corsi Group (www.corsi.com), a San Francisco-based public relations and advertising firm. Corsi’s more famous clients include the Oakland Raiders football team. Contact John through his alumni e-mail address as jganz1997@alum.kellogg.nwu.edu.

Last December Joe Urban took a job as director of product management at a new industry sponsored start-up called E2open -- a collaboration network in supply chain and product design. After five months getting the business started, Joe is director of vendor alliances. He is working with Gabriel Biguria ’96 and Bill Kaufmann ’96, and living in Belmont, Calif.

Chris Drews and his wife, Mary, became new parents on May 31 with the arrival of their baby girl, Lauren Nicole. Lauren was born 8 pounds, 10 ounces and 21 inches long. She has been sleeping through the night, so life is good! A year ago Chris joined ICG Commerce and is now director or business development in San Francisco.

Luis Gustavo Giolo writes: “After riding the Internet roller coaster for a year and a half, I joined the Sao Paulo office of Egon Zehnder as an executive search consultant focused in media and entertainment. The change has been great and the OB classes are proving to be of great value!”

Mike Breault moved to New York and is with ADVENTIS.

Michael Peck has been living in Los Angeles since last year. He is vice president of product development at USBX, a mergers and acquisition firm. Last November, Michael and Laurie had a son, Nathaniel. Doing well and enjoying southern California.

Ricky Delgado wrote from the Philippines, “I wanted only to say hello, and let the rest of my classmates in the U.S. know that I feel for all of you, and my condolences go to those who may have lost loved ones in NY.”

Peter Walter, his wife, Lyle, and son, Nathan, arrived in Bangkok earlier this year. He writes, “we’re all doing great, and are continuing to get settled. Each day we’re here feels more comfortable, thanks to more familiarity with our surroundings, small steps forward in learning Thai, and a growing network of work colleagues, friends of friends, and other new acquaintances to round out our new community.”
