Bruce Duncan, Former President and Chief Executive Officer, Equity Residential

Bruce W. Duncan, 53, is the recently retired president and chief executive officer of Equity Residential, the largest publicly traded apartment company in America. Equity Residential owns or has interest in 947 properties in 33 states and has 6,000 employees Mr. Duncan joined the company as president in April 2002 and was named CEO in January 2003. He assumed the role of CEO with the goals of refining the company’s portfolio, improving its operations through centralization and aligning the company’s team, including implementing succession planning throughout the organization. Those goals were achieved.

From 1995 through 2000 Mr. Duncan was chairman, president and CEO of Cadillac Fairview Corporation, one of the largest owners, managers and developers of commercial real estate in North America, with over 52 million square feet of commercial space. Cadillac Fairview focused on high quality retail centers in Canada and the U.S. and office properties in major Canadian cities. Mr. Duncan took over leading Cadillac Fairview in 1995 after its emergence from bankruptcy and successfully engineered a turnaround that culminated in a public offering on the New York Stock Exchange and the Toronto Exchange in November 1997 and selling the company in March 2000.

Prior to joining Cadillac Fairview, Mr. Duncan spent sixteen years at JMB Realty Corporation, serving as an executive vice president and member of the board of directors of JMB Realty Corporation and as president and co-CEO of JMB Institutional Realty Corporation.

Mr. Duncan holds a B.A. degree from Kenyon College and an M.B.A. from the University of Chicago. He has been a member of the board of trustees of Equity Residential as well as a director of Starwood Hotels & Resorts and The Rouse Company. He is also on the executive committee and the board of governors of the National Association of Real Estate Investment Trusts (NAREIT), the executive committee and board of directors of the National Multi-Housing Council and the board of directors of the Real Estate Roundtable (RER).
