Faculty and alumni honored for outstanding contributions to Kellogg community

5/3/2013 - Distinguished Kellogg faculty and alumni were honored Thursday, May 2, for their outstanding contributions to the Kellogg community. The award ceremony, called “With Gratitude,” was held at the Trump International Tower in downtown Chicago.

The honorees
Philip Kotler
Kotler, a fixture at Kellogg since 1961 and a longtime leader in the study of marketing, is the S.C. Johnson & Son Professor of International Marketing. He received the Schaffner Award for “exemplifying the cornerstones of Kellogg’s dynamic culture — intellectual energy, passion for collaboration and a belief in the transformative power of markets.”

In addition to being a distinguished member of the Kellogg faculty, Kotler is an award-winning researcher who has published more than one hundred articles in leading marketing journals. He is also the author of “Marketing Management: Analysis, Planning, Implementation and Control,” which remains one of the world’s most popular marketing texts for graduate students in business. He has published more than fifty books on marketing, business, economics and culture.

Belinda Shi ’02
The president of the Kellogg Alumni Club of San Francisco Bay Area, Shi received the Kellogg Alumni Club Leadership Award. This award “recognizes distinguished individuals who embody Kellogg’s community of brave thinkers — driving positive change, supporting Kellogg’s mission and strategy, and energizing our 54,000-person-strong network.”

“It was rewarding to see my time and effort was valued by the school and that I could make an impact on someone’s career path and life,” says Shi.

Matt Feldman ’86
Feldman, the president and CEO of the Federal Home Loan Bank of Chicago, received the Wade Fetzer Award for his “outstanding dedication and loyalty in support of the school’s alumni body.” A longtime member and current chair of the Kellogg Alumni Council of North America, Feldman has found friends and colleagues throughout the Kellogg community — not only in faculty and fellow alumni, but also in staff members and the school’s administration.

“My purpose in going to Kellogg was to get a master of management,” he says. What I ended up getting in addition to an excellent education was a lifelong connection to the school and a whole host of really close friends.”

Matt McCall ’92
McCall received the Distinguished Alumni Service Award, which recognizes “graduates who have made significant investments in shaping Kellogg’s strategy, culture and brand to compete in the global marketplace.”

A partner in the Chicago-based venture capital firm New World Ventures, McCall credits Kellogg with setting him up for success. He has been an active supporter of the annual fund and was a member of the search committee that brought Dean Sally Blount ’92 back to Kellogg.

“Kellogg has this incredible rich array, layer after layer, of resources, of people, of networks,” he says. “Every single day of my life, there’s something that has to do with Kellogg. It’s an incredibly special place.”

Excellence in alumni clubs
In addition to the above honorees, the Kellogg Alumni Club of San Francisco Bay Area and the Kellogg Alumni Club of Dallas-Forth Worth were both recognized with the Alumni Club of Excellence Award for their “extraordinary leadership and innovation in elevating, building and vitalizing the network.” Both clubs have introduced innovative programs to connect Kellogg alumni to the community — and to each other.
