Members of the Class of 2013 are inspired to ‘finish strong’ during their final year at Kellogg

The Class of 2013 has been urged to “think bravely” with Kellogg. Now with three quarters left before graduation, it’s time for them to “finish bravely” as well.

“Push yourselves,” advised Dean of Students Betsy Ziegler at the Class of 2013 Fall Convocation on Sept. 18. “This is the last time you’ll have the opportunity to take classes from the best faculty in the world and to push each other. I want you to finish strong.”

School administrators not only welcomed back students from summer break but also updated them on a host of initiatives. Kellogg Dean Sally Blount shared progress on several fronts, from recent faculty and leadership hires to plans for the new Kellogg building.

Faculty member Niko Matouschek, whom the students voted “Professor of the Year” in May, encouraged the second-years to take responsibility for their education and “do even better” these final three quarters. Matouschek urged them to experiment and broaden their horizons all the way to the end of their time on campus.

“Do justice to your own abilities and the opportunities you have here at Kellogg,” said the associate professor of management and strategy. “Work together and make this a year to remember.”

Hugs and handshakes punctuated the welcome-back event as classmates caught up with each other. Many had spent their summer away from Kellogg working for a variety of companies across a broad range of industries, including the Chicago Cubs, United Nations World Food Programme, and Jaguar North America. The convocation concluded with a BBQ dinner outside the Jacobs Center.
