External Funding Opportunities

The Office of Fellowships at Northwestern assists students in locating national and international fellowship competitions. Some fellowships provide funding to attend graduate school; others allow you to study or to conduct research overseas to gain practical experience in your field of study.

The Office of Fellowships assists all graduate students who are part of the Graduate School. If you speak to one of the staff in the Office of Fellowships, please make sure you tell them you are a PhD student. If you identify yourself as a Kellogg student, they may assume you are an MBA student, and MBA students don't qualify. Also, when you visit the link for graduate students you'll see that there is no graduate area/link for Kellogg students. You should look to the closest area/link (Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences, McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science, International, etc.) that falls into your research area to identify opportunities. Please follow the links on each department page leading to the page of national fellowships databases. Using these databases you can complete a search for applicable fellowships. The department pages are intended mostly to lead you to the national databases.

Eligibility requirements vary. Some opportunities may exclude business school students, so read eligibility and requirement sections very carefully. The Office of Fellowships also has a listserv, so I highly suggest subscribing to the listserv for information on fellowship opportunities. Email the listserv address; leave the subject BLANK; in the message, type "SUBSCRIBE fellowships (Firstname) (Lastname)."
