Doing business in Russia today requires the ability to navigate through massive uncertainty present in the economy and the ability to adapt to the rapidly changing environment. This course will help students to develop these necessary skills by focusing on the following goals:
First, the course will help students attain a clearer understanding of how the momentous changes that have swept through Russia since the collapse of the Soviet Union have affected the economy and the people of the Russian Federation. Some of the specific issues the course will address and explore on this topic are:
Second, the course will provide students with the knowledge required to perform business with Russian companies. Additionally, it will help students to identify areas of potential business opportunities in the Russian Federation. The course will also take an in depth look at the tactics of various successful consumer product companies in Russia. It will draw heavily on the lessons learned by international corporations and joint ventures operating in Russia.1) The political, social, and economic climate of Russia today,
2) The restructuring and privatization process in Russia,
3) The IMF’s role in Russia, and the repercussions for Russia’s future.
Third, the course will provide students with an insight into the recent changes in the Russian economy. Some of the specific issues the course will address and explore on this topic are:
1) The major shifts in the Russian banking industry after the financial crisis
2) The influence of international companies entering Russian markets and the resulting competition in the economy
3) Russia’s competitive ability in the global markets of the future.
Fourth, the students will learn about Russia’s unique history, culture, and politics.
Fifth, the course will give students the opportunity to apply the knowledge they have learned in class and other courses at Kellogg to a particular industry or issue in Russia, an exercise that will be applicable to other emerging markets throughout the world.
