Kellogg is a very welcoming community, and partners of Kellogg students enjoy many benefits. Below are listed some of the opportunities you can take advantage of:

Social Opportunities
In addition to socializing at Joint Ventures events, you can also participate in any of Kellogg's social clubs. Partners regularly participate in clubs like Cork and Screw, Gourmet and Gourmands, and even the Improv club! Additionally, Kellogg has an array of religious, cultural and volunteer clubs. You can view invdividual club's web sites using Kellogg's club directory. And, of course, you are always welcome to kick off the weekend at TG each Friday afternoon. Beer and snacks are provided, often accompanied by great entertainment by Kellogg bands, karaoke, etc. Sodas and juice are also offered, so be sure to bring the kids!

Educational Opportunities
A very attractive benefit for Kellogg partners is the opportunity to sit in on Kellogg classes. The process for doing this is informal, and is handled on a case-by-case basis with each professor. If you'd like to sit in on a class, here's what you should do:

  1. Have your student partner show you how to access the course offerings for the upcoming quarter.
  2. Select the classs. Please note that the class must have open enrollments (not seats) to allow visitors for the term.
  3. E-mail the professor 2-3 weeks before the quarter begins to ask for permission. The professor will most likely wait to see how full the class is before responding - so you may need to go to the first class and ask for permission then. Many professors welcome Kellogg partners into their classes, but keep in mind that it is the professor's decision - your request may be denied and the TMP (downtown Chicago classes) do not have the capacity for JVs to audit.
Sitting in on classes is a privilege that is sometimes extended to partners, so please follow these guidelines:
  1. Some classes foment section communication and bonding, and non-students may not participate. These include MORS 430, MGNT 431 and 438, and BASE 910A.
  2. Please do not attempt to sit in on a class that has full enrollment, even if there are empty seats in the room.
  3. Arrive early to the first class and introduce yourself to the professor.
  4. Generally, visitors are not allowed to participate in class. However, talk to the professor about whether you can participate in class discussions. A few professors welcome partner participation, while others require that you simply observe.
  5. Arrive to each class session early or on time. Do not disrupt the class by walking in late or leaving before the end.
  6. Sit in the back row, and If you have a cell phone with you, make sure it is turned off.
  7. Please do not complete Teacher Course Evaluations or ask faculty to provide letters of evaluation.
  8. Partners working full time at Northwestern have the option of taking undergraduate and continuing education classes at significantly reduced rates. Some partners even pursue degrees while working for the university. Please see the Northwestern benefits webpage for more details.

Mini-Courses
Many partners also enjoy taking "mini-courses" at The Norris Center. The center offers reasonably priced, fun classes - like pottery, wine tasting, yoga, and language courses.

Travel Opportunities
KWEST Trips
Kellogg partners are welcome to participate in student trips. Kellogg Worldwide Experience and Service Trips (KWEST) present great opportunities to spend time with your student while developing friendships with other Kellogg students. KWEST are the first trips of the academic year. They take place the week before CIM week (usually in early September) and are a fun way to jump right into Kellogg life. The trips are intended for first years, organized and led by second years. Partners can participate as first years, and lead trips as second years. Partners who have participated in KWEST highly recommend them - you'll return with an immediate group of close friends.

Ski Trip
Kellogg's annual Ski Trip takes place during the students' winter break, usually the week before Christmas. The destination changes each year, but it's always guaranteed to be a good time! Of course, JVs are welcome. If you can squeeze it in between your holiday travel plans, the Ski Trip will undoubtedly be a memorable experience!

GIM and Tech Ventures Trips
For those of you who secretly want to be Kellogg students, sign up with your student for a Global Initiatives in Management (GIM) or Tech Ventures trip! GIM offers several trips to foreign countries - China, Vietnam, Russia, Chile and Peru are just some examples. Students take the GIM class during 2nd quarter, and travel to the country they've studied during Spring Break. Throughout the class, students focus on a wide variety of industries and economic sectors. They invite high-level government officials and corporate executives from their chosen location, along with U.S. experts and Kellogg faculty members, to speak to their classes. Their travel itinerary includes meetings with top business and government leaders, as well as cultural and social outings. Kellogg partners are welcome to participate in the class as well as the trip.

Tech Ventures is similar to GIM in that it couples focused, classroom learning with travel to locations that offer direct contact with companies and hands-on industry experiences. Students learn to address current issues in technology and e-commerce, completing the class with travel to meet with industry leaders. Some years students have traveled to Silicon Valley; recently students traveled to Helsinki, Stockholm and London. During the visit, students meet with various business leaders and visionaries and work on projects pertaining to the evolution of e-commerce and its economic impact.

Whether you're interested in the travel component, or have a desire to learn about global business or technology, GIM and Tech Ventures are great educational, social and cultural opportunities.
