Club FAQs

The following frequently asked questions have been developed to help you understand more about the Kellogg Habitat for Humanity Club.

What is the Kellogg Habitat for Humanity Club all about?
The Kellogg Habitat for Humanity Club is a student chapter of Habitat for Humanity International.  The Club works with local Habitat for Humanity affiliates in an effort to give Kellogg students an opportunity to give back to the community by helping to build homes for the less fortunate.

Which Habitat for Humanity affiliates do you currently work with?
The Kellogg Habitat for Humanity Club currently has a long-standing relationship with the Habitat for Humanity Lake County affiliate based out of Waukegan, Illinois.  On occasion, the club will also work with the Windy City Habitat for Humanity.

Do I have to pay to participate?
No.  Each year the Executive Board makes a donation pledge to the affilate.  This donation will cover the cost of your attendance on a build and there are no club dues.  The club will hold numerous fund-raising events throughout the year and we appreciate all the help we can get from our members in meeting our fund-raising goals.

Do I need any experience?
No experience is required.  All you need is enthusiasm and the desire to help give back to the community.  A professional contractor will be on hand to ensure that the home is up to standsards and to maintain a safe atmosphere for all those participating.

What is a typical workday like?
Exciting!  Each workday is unique depending on the stage of the house being built.  Some of the many thing you might be required to do include - create the foundation, build the frame of the house, landscaping, siding, painting and/or installing drywall.  All highly skilled tasks, such as plumbing and electrical work, will be completed by contractors.

If I sign up as a member on the ListServ, do I have to volunteer for every workday?
No, the listserv is a way for us to announce upcoming work dates and solicit volunteers for those days.  Kellogg participants can volunteer as often or as little as the individuals and the clubs schedule permits.

How long is the typical workday?
The typical work day is a little more than eight hours, including travel time.  All build volunteers will meet at Jacobs to depart for the site at 7:30 AM and return to Evanston shortly after 5 PM.

Do I have to stay for the whole workday?
We encourage volunteers to remain onsite for the full workday.  However, special situations such as interviews, projects, and exams can be worked around.  Please inform the build lead before the day of the build if you have special circumstances which do not allow you to remain onsite for the entire day.
