Kellogg's culture promotes diversity as a resource for effective teamwork, leadership, and overall human communication. We can testify that this spirit really exists at school and that we experience it every day.
As a testimony to Kellogg's open and welcoming culture, in 2005, the student body elected an openly gay student body president! Read about it on BusinessWeek's website. (Last blurb on the page.) Kellogg has also been rated one of the most gay-friendly business schools in the US. Aplomb Consulting gave us a grade of "A" in its survey of gay friendliness. Check out the original Aplomb study here.

| Prospective or admitted students may have questions about the admission process. Our FAQ below should provide you with helpful information. If your question isn't answered below, feel free to email our admissions co-chair, Ryan Fowkes.

| What representation does the GLMA have on the admissions committee? |
There are both gay and lesbian officers on the committee. The GLMA works closely with the admissions committee to ensure prospective GLBT students receive due consideration.
|
| |
| Can I meet with current GLMA members when I visit Kellogg? |
Yes! We highly recommend that prospective students visit Kellogg to get a first hand experience of the Kellogg culture and its people. We would like you to be our guest while at Kellogg: we can meet you for lunch, have a conversation and even arrange to host you for a night. Email our Admissions Co-Chair, Ryan Fowkes to set something up.

| Should I be out in my application essays? |
Some members of the GLMA were out in their applications, others were not. It is a matter of personal choice. If you feel that being gay has material relevance to your application and are comfortable discussing it, then by all means talk about it. For instance, perhaps your sexual orientation was part of an issue that arose at work which you learned from, or perhaps you grew substantially as a person through your coming out process. Topics like these that talk about your orientation and address why you are a strong candidate for business school will give your application a personal touch and can be helpful.
You could also mention the GLBT-related clubs and organizations you have contributed to in the Activities section. However, if you don’t have an activity or topic to discuss, it is not advisable to mention your orientation just for the sake of mentioning it, in the hopes that that alone will “help you get in”. |

| Will everybody at Kellogg know that I am gay if I was out in my application? |
No. The admissions office respects the confidentiality of such disclosures. Even other administrative departments do not receive this information on an individual basis. In other words, you will not be outed because you were out in your essays. |
| |
| How many people belong to your association? |
There are over 40 active student members in the GLMA. This group is enhanced by faculty staff and partners. As students anonymously register to our mailing-list, we actually do not know how many people have chosen to receive e-mails from our group.
|
| |
| What if I am not interested in being out at Kellogg? |
Several members of the GLMA are out to us but not out to the rest of the school. We are firmly committed to supporting all lesbian, gay and bisexual Kellogg students. For this reason, a policy of strict confidentiality is maintained at every event that we organize (social, recruiting, etc.).
Along the same lines, we also provide a support network for those who want to discuss personal matters. |
| |
| Can I be out in recruiting? |
Again, the decision is up to you, but it is absolutely possible to be out during your job search at Kellogg. Several major firms actually hold specific recruiting events for gay, lesbian, and bisexual students (see our 2007-08 calendar of events).
We are actively building relationships between the GLMA and prospective employers/recruiters.

| |
| What about partners? |
Partners are welcome to participate in the GLMA activities and in any Kellogg activity open to significant others (as attending a class for free, for instance).
Partners can also choose to join Joint Ventures, Kellogg's association for significant others (mainly straight people). Note that two GLMA officers sit on the Joint Ventures board. This year, several Joint Ventures live in Evanston while their partners complete the Kellogg program.
Finally, you can choose to list your partner in your personal Kellogg profile (online face book). |
