Chinese Business Club Last Week Recap

Upcoming Events

The CBC had a great kick-off during the first week.

-       On Sunday, September 23rd, Wendy Kam (KSM’08), Jim Lerttanapaiboon (KSM’08) and Jae Hoon (KSM’08) hosted an informal session in McManus Lounge about corporate and networking etiquettes for new students interested in financial services / investment banking industry especially in the Asia Pacific region.  The event was very informative and we had over 25 first years attending the event.

-       On Tuesday, September 25th, the CBC hosted the annual Moon Festival Party in Optima Horizon Party Room.  We celebrated this traditional family-gathering day with more than 50 members of the CBC community.  Special thanks to the CBC leadership teams as well as Dawei Zhou (KSM’08) and other friends who donated the delicious moon-cakes.

-       On Friday, September 28th, the CBC had its first kick-off meeting in G44 of the Jacobs centre.  A large number of the CBC members turned out for the kick-off and gained insight on CBC’s mission, leadership team, events calendar and future leadership opportunities at CBC.

-       We are recruiting eight to nine first year/1Y directors to join our leadership teams.  Please refer to the attached CBC leadership application form and submit the completed application to Wendy Kam (wkam2009@kellogg.northwestern.edu) by the end of Saturday, October 6.

-       We are also selecting 2 trek leaders for the investment banking Hong Kong trek as well as 2 trek leaders for the Beijing/Shanghai trek.  We already received more than 10 applications for both trek leaders, and please refer to the attached Trek Leader application form and submit the completed application to Dong Li (dli2008@kellogg.northwestern.edu) by the end of Friday, October 12.  Selected trek leaders will be announced no later than Friday, October 19.

Student ImageWhat did you do before Kellogg?
I was a chemical engineer by training and had been working as a consultant for chemical/energy industry in Houston, Texas for 5 years.

What are you doing post Kellogg?

Investment banking at Merrill Lynch, New York.

What was your major at Kellogg? What were some clubs you joined while at Kellogg?
Accounting and Finance.  Well, if joining the club means subscribing to the listserv, I pretty much joined every club in Kellogg, but I was actively involved in IBCM (Co-Chair) and CBC (Co-Chair).

What was one of the most memorable Kellogg moments?
ACCT 430 weekly group meeting is definitely the highlight of my Kellogg experience.  OK, I was kidding.  There are so many memorable moments during my 2 years at Kellogg but I would say one of the most memorable moments is definitely during the KWEST trip in ‘05 (it was called KAOS trip then) when we cruised downhill in mountain bikes for 40 miles on unpaved road near Lapas, Bolivia.  There was no fence on the cliff side and the road was so narrow that we had to constantly look out for the buses/trucks, it was such a great feeling when we finally reached our destination and was definitely one of the most memorable bonding moments with my KAOS group members.

In hindsight, what is one thing you wish you did while at Kellogg?
GIM.

What one piece of advice would you offer to a current Kellogg student?
There are so many things going on here at Kellogg and you can easily get overwhelmed.  If you feel you have the energy/time to get involved in everything, by all means, do it.  But don’t do it just because everyone else seems to be doing it.  Make sure you leave time for your family, you loved ones and yourself, which will make your Kellogg experience much more enjoyable.

What’s your favorite restaurant in Chicago/Evanston?
I am sure the 2nd years will take you to our favorite Chinese and Korean BBQ places.  If you want to try something different, I highly recommend:

Indian: Hema’s Kitchen

6406 N. Oakley,

Chicago, IL 60645

Ph:(773) 338. 1627

Steak: Tango Sur

Tango Sur
3763 N Southport Ave
Chicago, IL 60613
(773) 477-5466

Both places are of good value and BYOB, trust me, your Kellogg experience won’t be complete without trying them J
