Recruiting Experiences
Kellogg CBC members pursue job opportunities across various industries in both the United States and Greater China. Those pursuing U.S. opportunities usually go through on-campus recruiting. There are a number of Asia opportunities that can be obtained through on-campus recruiting. However, similar to other top business schools, the bulk of Asia recruiting is done via online and email postings. Kellogg also has sufficient resources available for off-campus career search. Kellogg has an international career management staff dedicated to assist those interested in Asia opportunities. In addition, bulge bracket investment banks and prominent consulting firms based in Asia will conduct a U.S. tour, with Chicago as one of their destinations.

Industry: Technology
Location: United States
Topic: Tech recruiting at Kellogg as an international student
"I focused my recruiting on tech companies in the US. The 2nd year students who interned at tech companies and Kellogg’s High Tech Club provided ample resources preparing me for the tech interviews, as well as having equipped me with the knowledge of most current tech trends/strategies. Kellogg Tech Treks to Seattle and to the Bay Area both offered me opportunities to visit and learn a whole bunch of technology companies and the technology industry in the U.S. as an international student. (Kellogg Tech Treks are organized by students and consist of a series of tech company visits normally by 10-20 Kellogg students in less than a week.) I ended up having a handful of tech marketing internship opportunities; finally I did my internship at Microsoft and went to Bill G’s house party for the very last time in 2007. "

Industry: Biotech/Pharmaceuticals
Location: United States
Topic: Biotech recruiting
“At Kellogg, there are plenty of career opportunities within Pharma/Biotech space, especially if you are interested in marketing. Business Development (BD) opportunities are relatively fewer, but on-campus networking and assistance from second years and the Healthcare Club really helped me land my ideal BD job in an established Biotech firm in Boston. I focus all my recruiting in the US.”

Topic: Recruiting for a U.S. marketing job as an international student
“As an international student seeking opportunities in the U.S., I know I need to quickly adapt to the American culture, sharpen my networking skills, and gain a strong knowledge of the U.S. consumer market. My mentor from Hi-tech Club and the Class ‘07 set up one-on-one talks with me to share their experience and insights. Students from Kellogg Chinese Business Club and Asia Management Association are my closest friends at Kellogg. They were always there, encouraging and supporting me through the recruiting process; especially when I am frustrated. Following the tradition of providing a supportive Kellogg culture, I have made myself available to help 1st years with their recruiting and have established close bond with a number of first year students.”

Industry, Consulting
Location: China
Topic: Consulting internship recruiting in China
“With strong interests to figure out what consulting work looks like in greater China region, I pursued summer internship opportunities in leading consulting firms. The best thing I got from my recruiting efforts was that Kellogg students not only worked hard to improve their own recruiting skills but also tried their best to help others to improve even as competitors. In the end, the pie was bigger for everyone. More important, second year students spent tons of time to coach us from revising resume to practicing case interviews, no matter consulting is their final choice of career or not.”

Industry: Consulting
Location: China
Topic: Consulting internship and full-time recruiting in China
“I was debating between consulting and high-tech and China and US during my first year recruiting. So, my effort was spread across multiple areas. Kellogg’s Consulting Club, High-tech Club (High-tech Trek) and CBC club were the most valuable resources. I used the summer to try out consulting in China and decided that it is what I want to do for full-time. For second year recruiting, the high percentage of Kellogg students who did summer internship in consulting or want to get into consulting are definitely very helpful. During the decision making process, I can easily find Kellogg alumni in all major consulting firms in China, making it easy to really know the firms and to eventually choose the right one.”

Industry: Investment Banking
Location: United States
Topic: Excellent faculty and club support to switch careers
“Fulltime recruiting for investment banking is more difficult than summer internship because there are fewer spots available and a candidate has to go through more interviews to get an offer. My biggest takeaway is that the candidates need to answer the technical questions at least as well as other candidates who had previous finance experience or a banking internship. Kellogg Investment Banking & Capital Markets Club (IBCM) and all the finance faculty are amazingly approachable to give students generous help on advice, information and mock interviews. For career switchers, the lack of prior banking experience isn’t a concern to the banks but the candidates do need to highlight the past experience and skills that are transferrable to banking.”

Industry: Banking
Location: United States and China
Topic: Support from CBC and IBCM to recruit for jobs in U.S. and Greater China
“I focused my investment banking recruiting efforts in both Hong Kong and the U.S. Second-year students in both the CBC and the IBCM Club were extremely helpful. Those who interned at investment banks in Hong Kong over the summer provided great insights early on in the process so we stayed ahead of the curve. They helped me to navigate the difficult recruiting process and was extremely supportive. I really appreciated all their help.”
Andy, Class of 2009
Industries: Investment Banking and Private Equity
Location: Hong Kong
Topic: HK Banking Trek
"One of the biggest secrets of Kellogg is its strength in finance and its strong alumni presence in the investment banking field in HK. I looked at both investment banking and private equity opportunities in HK. Through the Kellogg HK Banking Trek, all Kellogg students who were interested in banking opportunities in Asia had the experience to visit the bulge bracket firms in HK and directly speak with bankers who could be their interviewers during the job interviews. Our alumni who work in all major investment banks in Hong Kong gave us tremendous support throughout the whole recruiting process. Because of the brand, alumni, second year students and HK Banking Trek of Kellogg, I managed to secure both investment banking and private equity summer internship offers from bulge bracket firms in Hong Kong. Thank you, Kellogg. ” |
