The
McManus advantage
Located
in downtown Evanston, just minutes from the Donald
P. Jacobs Center, the McManus Living/Learning
Center is home to Kellogg students, visiting scholars
and their families. The seven-story complex opened
its doors in 1947 as part of Northwestern University’s
response to the sharply increased enrollment of
married students after the World War II —
a result of the GI Bill. Over the past two years,
Northwestern University and the Kellogg School
have invested more than $5 million in improvements
to the building.
McManus combines all the amenities of a traditional
apartment building with the benefits of living
in a community of scholars.
One-stop living
The Kellogg family is as diverse as the families
contained within it, and there’s a place
for everyone at McManus. Single students and students
with partners and/or children choose the apartment
style — single studio, double studio or
one-bedroom (see floor plans to the left) —
most comfortable for them.
McManus residents may opt for their apartments
to be unfurnished or fully
furnished. The available apartment furniture
was recently replaced with new furniture
— custom designed and produced in consultation
with a Chicago-based architecture and design firm.
Each apartment also features new, double-hung
windows, which help regulate the temperature inside
and keep unwelcome noise outside.
The monthly rental rate at McManus includes
all utilities except local and long-distance
telephone service. There is at least one outlet
for basic cable television in each apartment,
and wireless Internet access
is available throughout the building. All apartments
are air conditioned by individually
controlled window units.
Situated on the first floor of the center is a
spacious, comfortably furnished student
lounge with wireless Internet access.
Recent building renovations included a complete
overhaul of the lounge, which features new furniture,
carpet, lighting, tile and paint as well as new
artwork on the walls. The scene of many parties
and social events, the lounge is home to a large-screen
TV, piano, kitchen, pool table, foosball table
and ping–pong table.
Across the way, two laundry rooms
are equipped with washers and dryers that accept
coins or funds pre-loaded onto Northwestern University
ID cards (known as WildCARDs). Also on the first
floor is an exercise room featuring
Lifecycles, a rowing machine, a treadmill, dumbells,
Stairmasters, a Universal machine, Reebok BodyTrek,
a TV with cable and other fitness equipment.
There is a newly renovated communal playroom on
the ground floor of the building where resident
children may play, when supervised. Kellogg Kids
meets here regularly.
A community of scholars
The McManus Living/Learning Center has much more
to offer than its convenient location, billing
and building features. It offers residents a chance
to be part of a community of scholars.
Any of the 13 first-floor or upper-floor group
study rooms can be reserved until 10
p.m. Each study room is equipped with four high-speed
data connections, a large-screen monitor for laptop
hook-up, a conference table and a chalkboard.
For night owls, early birds and everyone in between,
McManus computer labs are open
24 hours a day. Complete with Dell Optiplex PCs,
color and black-and-white laser printers, and
a scanner, the labs keep McManus residents connected
to the Kellogg School and the world. Available
software includes word processing, spreadsheet
analysis, statistical analysis, database management,
linear programming and full access to Kellogg's
network.
