Kellogg Web-Based Course Bidding System

During bidding rounds, it is important for students to drop unwanted courses to be available for promotion from the waitlist.

Students will be promoted off the waitlist up to a maximum of 5 credits. A student will not be promoted into a class if doing so would result in holding a seat in more than five class units. The student retains his/her position on the wait list, but is passed over for promotion while this condition persists.

During Add/Drop rounds, when a student adds himself/herself to a wait list, he/she must also indicate which registered class to drop if promoted into the wait listed class. If this is not indicated, the student will not be promoted into a class if doing so would result in holding a seat in more than five class units. The student retains his/her position on the wait list, but is passed over for promotion while this condition persists.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I place a bid?

  • From Class Search
Enter search criteria and click ‘Search’. In the search results, find your desired section and click Bid.
On the Add Bids page, enter the points which you wish to bid for this section.
  • From My Cart
If you already have class sections in your cart, simply click Bid on one of them.

What is the 'My Cart' area and how and why should I use it?

  • The 'My Cart' area is a work space to store courses that interest you. You should use it because it only lists courses that you have already pre-selected.
In order to place courses in 'My Cart':
    Click 'Class Seach '.
Enter search criteria and click ‘Search’. On the Class Results page, find your desired section(s), and click ‘Add to Cart’.

What is the most I can bid for a single course?

  • It is possible to bid all of your available points on any one course. But remember, your point total is for the entire year, not just this quarter, so bid judiciously.

How many courses can I bid for?

  • You can bid for a maximum of 5 units, which can mean a total of 10 half unit courses.

How many points will a successful bid cost?

  • All successful bids will be charged either the clearing price for that course, or if the course is under-subscribed, 1 point. The clearing price is the lowest successful bid at the end of the auction in round 1 (or the auction in round 2 for those classes that are open in round 2). The rest of the points will be returned to the points available. For point charges for waitlisted admittees, please see below.

How many points will a promotion from the waitlist cost?

  • All courses on the waitlist have a bid points held value, which is the points charged for being placed on the waitlist. If the waitlist position is promoted to the roster, only the bid points held will be charged for that roster position. The cost of a waitlist promotion has no effect on the clearing price for the course.

Is it possible to have two different clearing prices for the same course?

  • Yes.
If the course is under-subscribed in the first round, the first round clearing price is 1 point. The bids in the second round auction can easily exceed the number of seats available. Then the lowest successful bid would establish the clearing price for the second round - something higher than 1 point.
  • A second case is when a course is over subscribed in the first round. The first round clearing price is set something above 1 point. If enough drops occur from the waitlist as well as from the roster for the course, it becomes open for bids again and the second round auction will establish another clearing price.

How can I change my bid?

  • During bidding rounds any previous bid activity can be changed or dropped.
The 'My Classes’ screen displays enrollment positions, waitlist positions and current bids. Buttons to drop or modify are available from this screen.

Will points be returned if I drop a course or a waitlist?

  • All points will be returned for courses dropped before the first day of the quarter. Beginning with the first day of the quarter through the end of the 'Add 'period, 80% of the points bid will be returned. No points are returned for classes dropped after the first week of class.
  • Dropping a waitlist position will return all points associated. All points will be returned for waitlist positions that are remaining at the end of the Drop period, usually the end of the fourth week of class.

How do I get on a waiting list, and what is the rank order?

  • When bids are resolved after the first round, all unsuccessful bids are placed on the waitlist in the rank order of the points bid. These points will be deducted if the waitlist position is advanced into the course.
During the second round your bid request will automatically place you on the waitlist when you attempt to bid on a course with 0 open seats. All the waitlist positions with 0 points will first be ordered by date and then by tiebreak ranking. There is an advantage to getting on a waitlist early, but on any one specific date the tiebreak ranking will be the only distinction.

How will I know if I get a course from the wait list?

  • Promotion from the waitlist is automatic when someone drops from the roster. This promotion will show immediately on the 'My Classes'screen.

How are tie bids resolved?

  • Tie bids are resolved based on the tiebreak ranking assigned at the beginning of each quarter. A special case is 0 points on the waitlist. All the waitlist positions with 0 points will first be ordered by date and then by tiebreak ranking. There is an advantage to get on a waitlist early, but on any one specific date the tiebreak ranking will be the only distinction.

Where do I find my tiebreak ranking?

  • Tiebreak ranking appears on the 'My Points'page. The rank will be expressed in the form of a number. For example, 27 means that the student has the 27th highest ranking and will be considered before the students with a ranking greater than 27.

Where do I find my number of points available?

  • Your available points are always displayed at the top of every page in the Bidding and Registration system. Whenever you try to place or modify a bid, points available will be displayed. When modifying a bid, the points that are listed as already bid on that course are not included in the points available. The 'My Points 'page will show the points at the beginning of the term and a quick summary of the deductions leading to the points available.

What is the points ledger?

  • If there is no active bidding round, the Bid buttons are not displayed. Also, if you have already bid for the class, or if it exists in your Enrollments or Waitlists, you will not be able to bid. However, you can Modify a bid which was placed during the current round.

How can I print my classes?
