USING X-WIN32 TO ACCESS SKEW3

Kellogg users wishing to access skew3 using an X windows emulator may use StarNet's X-Win32. The Academic Technologies group of Northwestern University has purchased an unlimited campus license for this application. Under this license, Kellogg users can get a copy of the software at no cost to them.

This page provides information on how to install and configure X-Win32 to access skew3. More detailed information is provided by means of Acrobat PDF handouts.

INSTALLING X-WIN32

  • All the necessary files and relevant serial numbers are available for downloading at:
    http://avendesora.at.northwestern.edu/x-win32/

Note for Mathematica users: if you want to use Mathematica on skew3, you need to download the following updated Mathematica font file: BDF.zip Unzip these fonts in a sub-directory of "\Program Files\StarNet\X-Win32\Common\Lib\Fonts\" in your computer (e.g., a folder called "Mathematica1") and then use Xconfig to add the path to them. The Mathematica font files on Startnet/NU site have not been updated to work properly with Mathematica version 5.

  • The installation must be done in two steps:
    1. Install the application. The Jacobs Center complex is within the 129.105 subnet. People calling the Chicago campus modem pool should use the license number corresponding to the 165.124 subnet.
    2. Install additional font sets by running X-Config and clicking on the Fonts tab. Recommended fonts sets are: Sun CDE, 100DPI, and Sun Open Windows. Without the 100dpi font set, the display for skew3 will not be correct.
  • Print our handout for more detailed information on the installation procedure.

CONFIGURING X-WIN32 TO ACCESS SKEW3

  • Launch X-Config and use the Wizard to create a session for skew3.
  • Access to skew3 is accomplished using the XDMCP protocol.
  • The XDMCP broadcast method must be set to "Query"
  • Make sure "X Selection" is set to "primary".
  • Print our handout for more detailed information on the configuration procedure.
