WHARTON RESEARCH DATA SERVICES (WRDS)
WRDS can be accessed via its web interface or via its Unix server.
MBA students: Computers connected to the network (through an ethernet jack, no wireless or VPN) in the first and second floors of the Jacobs Center, as well as the Kellogg computer lab in Wieboldt Hall, have IP-controlled access (no login required) to WRDS' web interface. Point your web browser to wrds-web.wharton.upenn.edu/wrds/connect. WRDS will require your Kellogg / Northwestern email address for authentication; it will then send you a URL for access.
Note: Individual "masters" accounts will be approved only for students working under the supervision of faculty member on a project. These accounts are limited to one academic term and require a prior approval from the faculty member who is advicing the research project.
Current faculty and doctoral students: To request an account, go to the WRDS web site and click on "Account Request" and then on the "request a new account" link. Fill the required fields (use your Kellogg email address) and choose the appropriate type of account. Please use your netid for the login name. The account is created within minutes, after verification of user eligibility by Research Computing, and details are sent automatically to the user. This account allows both access to the web interface or login to the UNIX server directly (use SSH Secure Shell to connect to wrds.wharton.upenn.edu)
Class accounts: Faculty members may apply for a class account, which gives students in the class a login to the web interface for the duration of academic term in which the course takes place. To get a class account, in the "Account Request" form choose "Class Account" and specify the course number, the quarter in which it takes place and the ending date.
Faculty members who previously requested a class account and would like to reactivate it for use in a different academic quarter need to send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org, specifying the account login and the new expiration date.
WRDS is a data management service which enables users to access databases (to which Kellogg subscribes) via a web-based interface or via a Unix server. Data on the Unix server is generally available both in binary (Fortran) format and in SAS format. WRDS is the preferred access method for CRSP, Compustat, TAQ, and CDA/Spectrum 13F filings (institutional common stock holdings and transactions).

WRDS is accessed via its web server or Unix server, with an appropriate login and password. Kellogg faculty and doctoral students are eligible for accounts (for both the web and Unix servers) upon request; MBA, law and undergraduate students are not eligible for accounts on this system.
