January 5, 2004: The UNIX server SKEW3 has been upgraded Research computing has replaced the three-year old UNIX server with a new SUN Fire V480 server.
The major improvements include:
Compared to the old server (a three-year old Sun V420R), the new machine has more than double the CPU speed, and has four-times more RAM. The new system is designed to provide improvements in both computing and I/O, providing faster run times for SAS, Matlab, STATA and many other batch jobs. The transition should be seamless to users: (1) we preserve the host name (SKEW3); (2) the file directory layout are the same; (3) login ids and passwords are also retained; (4) we run the same operating system (Solaris 8). |
