Announcements during previous years:

December 5, 2003: Zacks historical data files have been updated on Skew3

Changes in 2003

The file layout of 2003 files is almost identical to that of 2002 with an exception in master code reference files - exmast.dat and mast.dat were combined into one file as mast.dat in the 2003 update.

November 6, 2003: New datasets acquired

We have added the following data sets to our collection:

  • NAIC Property/Casualty InfoPro includes financial information on almost all property-casualty insurers doing business in the United States during the period between 1993 and 2002. Researchers using these data should acknowledge the support of the Zell Center in their papers. For a more detailed description and access to the documentation, please point your browser to:
    www.kellogg.northwestern.edu/researchcomputing/naic.htm.
  • World Trade Analyzer 1985-2001 contains adjusted United Nations commodity trade data. The data is in a time series covering the period 1985 to 2001. The WTA contains data on more than 800 commodities based on the Standard International Trade Classification Revision 2, covering approximately 180 world trading partners. Kellogg's license is for a stand-alone copy; it can be accessed at a workstation in the Research Computing library (Jacobs 4219). For a more detailed description and access to the documentation, please point your browser to:
    www.kellogg.northwestern.edu/researchcomputing/wta.htm.

Research Computing would like to acknowledge the Zell Center and professor Johannes Moenius for financing the acquisition of the NAIC InfoPro and World Trade Analyzer, respectively.

Also, in our "Data" web page, we have added a brief description and a link to the Chicago Research Data Center (CRDC). This Center is a is a collaboration between the Census Bureau and a consortium consisting of Argonne National Laboratory, the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, Northwestern University, the University of Chicago and the University of Illinois at Chicago. There is a wide variety of Census economic micro data that are not normally available for public use. The proposal review process is lengthy and extremely rigorous. For more information, point your browser to www.kellogg.northwestern.edu/researchcomputing/crdc.htm.

Finally, there is a possibility of acquiring data from the Investor Responsibility Research Center (IRRC). We would like to know if there are any researchers interested in these data on corporate governance data -- please send a message to Research Computing if you are. For a full listing of the variables included in the dataset, refer to wrds.wharton.upenn.edu/ds/irrc/index.shtml. The original dataset is discussed extensively in a Feb. 2003 paper in the QJE by Gompers, Ishii and Metrick (available on line).

August 5, 2003: Unlimited access to Science Direct e-journals, 1995 through most recent issues

Date: Tue, 05 Aug 2003 15:47:41 -0500
From: Leslie Bjorncrantz
Subject: NU Library now offers full text journal article access (journals published by Elsevier, Harcourt, and Academic Press) through ScienceDirect

Note: A link to Science Direct is available from the Research Computing page, under "Reference & Papers", "Academic Journals".

ANNOUNCING SCIENCE DIRECT: UNLIMITED FULL-TEXT ACCESS TO E-JOURNALS ANYTIME, ANYWHERE

WHAT:

Northwestern University Library, Galter Health Sciences Library, and Pritzker Legal Research Center are pleased to announce a joint agreement with Elsevier to provide full-text electronic access to Elsevier, Harcourt, and Academic Press journals through ScienceDirect. Content includes journals subscribed to by all three libraries, including full backfiles extending to 1995. ScienceDirect is currently one of the world’s largest providers of online literature with an emphasis on the sciences.

The Northwestern libraries jointly subscribe to more than 700 titles in ScienceDirect. Because there is some duplication in subscriptions between campuses, the libraries will be able to use credits to select some additional titles. Elsevier has agreed to open its entire database of 1800 electronic journals THROUGH DECEMBER 2003 so that the Northwestern community can explore its contents. In December, the libraries’ selectors will determine which additional titles to add based on campus input and usage data provided by Elsevier.

WHERE:

Access ScienceDirect at www.sciencedirect.com. On the University Library Web page, ScienceDirect is also linked in the ER (Electronic Resources) at er.library.northwestern.edu. Search for "ScienceDirect" or "Elsevier" to locate the link.

Databases such as PubMed may not have the complete list of Elsevier full-text titles as live links at this time. To search the full-text of all Elsevier titles available, be sure to link directly to ScienceDirect. A complete list of all journal titles is available on the Web site.

HOW:

The database is available 24/7 from any Evanston or Chicago campus address. There is no limit to the number of users who can access the files simultaneously. Off-campus access is available via dial-up modem or the VPN.

WHO:

Contact the libraries’ selectors (staffweb.library.northwestern.edu/cm/cm_pages/selectname.html) for more information on this new service. The reference desks at any of the libraries can also provide immediate assistance and help in accessing the database. Comments and suggestions are appreciated. Training and additional promotion are planned for the fall.

July 11, 2003: NU Library subscribes to Business Source Premier

The Northwestern Library, in partnership with Kellogg, now offers EBSCO Corporation's business database Business Source Premier. This product should enhance significantly online access to the business journal literature. At the same time, through our Kellogg-Library partnership, we have been able to continue our subscription to ProQuest's ABI/INFORM Global. While there is some overlap between products, each database has enough valuable "exclusives" to make it desirable to offer both to Kellogg faculty, students, and staff. Since the two companies' products are in direct competition, Northwestern will benefit as each database adds content to try to gain customers.

Business Source Premier - description:

Business Source Premier, designed specifically for business schools and libraries, provides nearly 3,300 full text scholarly publications, including more than 1,000 peer-reviewed journals. In addition to the full text, this database provides indexing and abstracts for more than 4,100 journals. This database offers information in nearly every area of business including management, economics, finance, accounting, international business, and more. Business Source Premier contains full text from the world's top management and marketing journals including Harvard Business Review, California Management Review, Administrative Science Quarterly, Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Industrial & Labor Relations Review, Journal of Management Studies, Journal of Marketing Management, Journal of Marketing Research (JMR), Journal of Marketing, Journal of International Marketing, etc. The database also includes other sources of full text information such as country economic reports from the EIU, DRI-WEFA, ICON Group and CountryWatch and detailed company profiles for the world's 5,000 largest companies. Business Source Premier provides expanded indexing and abstract backfiles for the top scholarly business journals, dating back to 1965 or the first issue published (whichever is more recent). In some cases, indexing, abstracting, and PDF coverage actually goes back further than 1965; for example, Academy of Management Journal is available back to 1958, Accounting Review to 1926, Administrative Science Quarterly to 1956, California Management Review to 1958, Industrial & Labor Relations Review to 1947, Journal of Accounting Research to 1963, Journal of Finance to 1946, Journal of Marketing to 1936, Journal of Marketing Research (JMR) to 1964, Management Science to 1954, Operations Research to 1956, etc. More than 200 of the journals have PDF full text back to 1965 or the first issue published. Business Source Premier contains PDF images for the great majority of journals; many of these PDF's are native (searchable) or scanned-in-color. This database is updated daily on EBSCOhost.

Note: Business Source Premier is an upgrade to Business Source Elite. Links to this database and ABI/Inform Global, are available on the Research Computing "Data" page, under "Full-Text databases." To browse the holdings of a publication in Business Source Premier, you can either:

  • Go to NUCat and type the publication title under "Journal" in the search form. NUCat will provide the link to Business Source Premier or any other database that includes full text or abstracts of the publication you searched for.
  • Go directly to Business Source Premier and click on the "Publications" button. This will present you with an alphabetical list of publications.

June 27, 2003: WRDS system back online as of 4:00 pm.

The WRDS system is back online, after a power outage. Shortly after noon today, WRDS had informed that their systems were offline due to power outages in portions of Philadelphia. Below is WRDS's latest announcement:

Date: Fri, 27 Jun 2003 16:59:00 -0400
From: "Crispi, Steve"
Subject: WRDS Update

The WRDS system and support e-mail were unavailable today from approximately 1:25 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. EDT due to a significant power outage in the Philadelphia area that affected many buildings on the University of Pennsylvania campus. All processes were terminated at the time WRDS became unavailable; users will need to restart any queries or programs that were running at that time. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

We will make every effort to reduce the likelihood that events of this type will affect WRDS users, and as a result, we intend to relocate the WRDS server to an area of Philadelphia that is less prone to this type of outage. If you have any questions, please send e-mail to wrds-support@wharton.upenn.edu .
