MATLAB INSTALLATION GUIDE

Before Installation

  • The current version is 7.4, release R2007a.
  • Do not install over a previous working version even if this is an upgrade. You may uninstall the old version after you have successfully installed the new one.
  • R2007a is too large to distribute as ISO images on DVDs. So, the software has to be downloaded directly form the MathWorks as explained below.

Licensing

  • Kellogg has both a concurrent license for office computers and a group license for faculty laptops. The concurrent license requires computers to be connected to the NU network and has more toolboxes than the group license does (see the list in our Matlab page.
  • The license codes are ONLY for NU faculty and staff involved in research computing.
  • The fees for the academic years 2006-07 and 2007-08 are: $50.00 per computer for the concurrent license and $100 for the group license. The computer must be university-owned.
  • If you decide to participate in the lease, please e-mail Research Computing and provide your CUFS number.

Hardware Requirements

  • RAM memory: 512 MB RAM minimum (1 GB is strongly recommended).
  • Disk space: At least 500 MB of available hard disk space for Matlab only.
  • Operating system: Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows Server 2003, Windows XP x64, Windows Vista

Installation for the Windows Concurrent License

The installation should be done over the network as described below. For faculty only, if you need install a copy on a university-owned computer at home, please contact researchcomputing-help@kellogg.northwestern.edu.

  1. For installation you will need R2007a license files. These files can be found in the following directory:

    \\kis-rc\Matlab\License files\r2007a\WinConc

Click Start -> Run, type "\\kis-rc\Matlab" (without quotes), and click OK.
Note: If installing on a laptop, make sure to connect with an ethernet cable and to run the KelloggConnect utility. The connection to \\kis-rc will take about a minute. If the path cannot be found, try "\\kis-rc.kellogg.local" instead. When prompted for your login, type "kellogg\your_netid". Locate the files plp1.txt, license22.txt, and license.txt and make them available to you during the installation.
  2. R2007a is too large to distribute as ISO images on DVDs. The ISO images are directly downloaded from MathWorks. Therefore, in order to install R2007a, you need to have a fast internet connection.
  3. Go to http://www.mathworks.com/downloads/web_downloads. If you do not have a MathWorks account, the webserver will ask you to create one. To do so, you have to be associated with an NU license to download the new release. The license number for the concurrent license is 256165.
  4. Once logged into MathWorks, go to the products list page and select R2007a as well as your platform/OS combination. Download the product and proceed with the installation.
    Note
: In order to download multiple products at once, you will need to have Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 5.0 or higher. Otherwise, you must manually download each product.
  5. During the isntallation process, you will need PLP1.txt and license.txt files retrieved in Step 1.
  6. Choose the CUSTOM installation option. The "Typical" option will install all toolboxes, wasting your time and disk space.
  7. By default, all the toolboxes licensed through NU are checked. Please uncheck MATLAB Web Server, which is reserved for a particular machine on campus. You may want to uncheck more boxes if you do not plan to use them.

Installation for the Windows Group License

  1. For installation you will need R2007a license files. The files for the Windows Group can be found in the following directory:

    \\kis-rc\Matlab\License files\r2007a\WinGroup

Click Start -> Run, type "\\kis-rc\Matlab" (without quotes), and click OK.
Note: If installing on a laptop, make sure to connect with an ethernet cable and to run the KelloggConnect utility. The connection to \\kis-rc will take about a minute. If the path cannot be found, try "\\kis-rc.kellogg.local" instead. When prompted for your login, type "kellogg\your_netid". Locate the file plp.txt and make it available to you during the installation.
The license number for the group license is 170987.
  5. Be ready to paste the Personal License Password (PLP) from the file PLP1.txt retrieved in Step 1 when the installer asks for it.

Installation for the Other Licenses

1. Unix and Linux

2. Mac OS X (PPC) or Mac OS X (Intel)

Installation of NAG Toolbox

NUIT has purchased NAG toolbox for MATLAB to go with our MATLAB license. To install NAG toolbox for MATLAB:

  1. You need to have Matlab installed.

  2. Go to "\\kis-rc\Matlab\NAG" and copy the appropriate zipped file (there is one for Linux and another one for Windows) to a local directory
  3. Unzip the file and run the installed by double-clicking on "setup.exe" to install the product, preferably to a subdirectory of "\Program Files\MATLAB\R2006b\". By default, the installer will create a "nag" folder in the "toolbox" folder if pointed to the path where Matlab is installed), where all other toolboxes were installed. This is an unlicensed release and it does not require any license file.
  4. Start up Matlab, and choose the menu File > Set Path. Click on the "Add Folder" button to add the paths for the toolbox itself (e.g., C:\Program Files\MATLAB\R2006b\toolbox\nag\nag) and for the NAG examples (e.g., C:\Program files\MATLAB\R2006b\toolbox\nag\examples). When you are done, click on the "Save" button and the on "Close" to exit the Set Path dialog window.
  5. Note: With the 2006b release, we noticed that one information file (info.xml in the "toolbox\nag\nag" sub directory) causes an error in Matlab because the content is not waht Matlab expects. Renaming this file to info.xml.bak will avoid the display of the error, while the NAG routines will run.

Configuration for firewall (concurrent license only)

The Windows XP built-in firewall appears to require no additional configuration after installation. If you have another firewall installed and cannot connect to license server, make sure that your firewall allows access to the following two TCP ports:

  • matlab.it.northwestern.edu 27000 (from your client to license server)
  • matlab.it.northwestern.edu 1970 (back to your client)
  • The IP address of matlab.it.northwestern.edu is 129.105.110.112

Miscellaneous

If you have any problems on this, please send email to researchcomputing-help@kellogg.northwestern.edu.
