Nonprofit Executive Education – Social Networking Frequently Asked Questions

Social Networking Overview

Using the Kellogg Nonprofit LinkedIn Group

Social Networking Overview

Why is Kellogg becoming involved in social networking?
Online social networking is a dynamic way to foster meaningful connections among people with similar interests.  Many of our participants have asked for Kellogg-branded social networking communities.  Participation is not required but we encourage you to sign up and explore the community.

Why is Kellogg using LinkedIn?
LinkedIn is the premier business and social networking tool today.  Our participants, students, and alumni have told us that this is the social network we should focus on first.

What benefits come from joining the Kellogg Center for Nonprofit Management group on LinkedIn?
Joining the Kellogg Center for Nonprofit Management LinkedIn community allows you to strengthen your network within the Kellogg network.  Using LinkedIn, you can easily identify other members of the Kellogg community.

How does this relate to the Kellogg Alumni Network?
The Kellogg Alumni Network is a separate network for alumni of Kellogg’s degree granting programs.  If you attended a program granting Alumni status you may visit the Alumni LinkedIn FAQ (login required).

Social networking for Nonprofit Executive Education certificate participants is an additional service to help our participants form deeper connections with the Nonprofit Executive Education community and with each other.

What information is being shared with outside social networking organizations such as LinkedIn?

The only information that has been shared with LinkedIn is your preferred email address, so that you may be pre-approved for membership in the group.  LinkedIn does not use this information for any other purpose.

Using Kellogg LinkedIn Groups

What is LinkedIn? How do I get an account?
LinkedIn is an online network of more than 20 million experienced professionals from around the world, representing 150 industries. It is currently the premier business social networking tool. LinkedIn is an independent company and not affiliated with Kellogg. One of the services they provide is to enable members of outside groups, such as Kellogg, to find each other within the broader LinkedIn community. Using this service requires that you have a free LinkedIn account. Please see the LinkedIn FAQ for more information

How do I join the Kellogg Executive Education LinkedIn group?
If you already use LinkedIn and your Executive Education preferred email address is associated with your LinkedIn account you are already preapproved and you only need one click.

  • Create a LinkedIn account
  • Add your preferred email address to your LinkedIn account. Adding it to an existing LinkedIn account will not change how you use LinkedIn.
  • If you received an email invitation to join our group click on the invitation link or search the LinkedIn groups for 'Kellogg Executive Education'.

I clicked on the invitation and I'm told my membership is pending. Why?
For Kellogg-sponsored groups, most likely your LinkedIn account does not contain the email address that was pre-approved by Kellogg. Please allow 3 - 5 days for your request to be processed. For affinity groups, the manager of that group is responsible for approving new members.

How do I use a Kellogg Group in LinkedIn?
In addition to displaying your Kellogg Group logo, so others who find your LinkedIn profile will know you are part of the Kellogg community, you can narrow your searches to show only members of Kellogg group(s) you have joined.

  • Logon to your LinkedIn account
  • Click Advanced Search at the top of the page
  • Fill in the search criteria as you normally would (e.g., name, company, location...)
  • Click Search Within My Groups at the bottom of the page
  • Select the Kellogg group(s) you want to search in
  • Click Search

How do I send a message to the entire group?
Currently there is no way to do this through LinkedIn. LinkedIn has told us they will be adding features to groups shortly, such as "Ask a question of my group", but the ability to send a mass message to a group is not one of the expected features. This ensures that no one can "spam" the group, but it does limit the utility, especially for smaller groups.

How can I control how people see my Kellogg Group membership in LinkedIn?
LinkedIn can display the logo of your Kellogg group(s) when you show up in a search and in your profile. You can control whether people outside of the Kellogg group can see this logo.

  • Logon to your LinkedIn account
  • Click My Groups
  • Click Settings next to the group whose display settings you wish to modify
  • Select Yes or No below "Would you like to display the Kellogg group logo on your profile to non-Kellogg group members?"
  • Click Save Changes

How can I control how other members of Kellogg groups contact me?

  • Logon to your LinkedIn account
  • Click My Groups
  • Click Settings next to the group whose contact settings you wish to modify
