COURSE NAME: Negotiations

INSTRUCTOR: Y. Sekou Bermiss

CASEPACK (YES or NO?): YES

FIRST ASSIGNMENT:

Read chapters 1-5 of Fisher, Ury, and Patton's Getting to Yes. (Fisher, R., Ury, W., & Patton, B. 1991. Getting to Yes. New York: Penguin).

You don't have any reading from the case packet before the class, and in fact, you should not do any readings from it in advance.  However, I would like you to briefly answer the following questions and attach your answers in an email to me at: (s-bermiss@kellogg.northwestern.edu) by 5pm on June 15th.

Please email me a brief paragraph describing:

(1) Up to this point, what has been your most challenging negotiation experience?

(2) Let me know what types of negotiations you have encountered in your work experience.  What is the biggest personal or work related negotiation you will conduct in the next 6 months?

(3) Imagine that this is the last day of class and complete this statement: This was a great class because...

I look forward to meeting you!

ATTENDANCE  POLICY:

MORS 470 has an attendance policy that is uniformly applied to all sections of 470. Prepared attendance is required for all sessions so that all students benefit from the negotiation exercises. You may miss one negotiation exercise without penalty if you provide me with advance notice. If you miss a second exercise, you will lose a letter grade. If, in conjunction with any absence, you do not provide advance notice or fail to provide a substitute when required to do so, you will lose a letter grade. More details of the attendance policy will be discussed on the first night of class.

There will be a negotiation exercise during the first class.  Role materials for this negotiation will be distributed and prepared in class.  Please note that you are strongly encouraged from not using your free miss for the first class.  The negotiation exercise on the first night provides a critical foundation for all subsequent exercises and learning in the course.

INSTRUCTOR:  Susan Crotty

CASEPACK (YES or NO?):  YES, required

FIRST ASSIGNMENT:

Read Chapters 1-3 of Getting to Yes before the first class session. This is easy reading, but important to introduce key class ocnepts we’ll disucss on the first day of class.  The syllabus and class schedule are on both my faculty web page and Blackboard.

In addition, please answer the following questions and attach your answers and a copy of your résumé to an email to me at (susancrotty@kellogg.northwestern.edu) by 5 p.m. on June 13.

(1) Let me know what types of negotiations you encounter in your job. What is the biggest personal or work related negotiation you will conduct in the next 6 months?

(2) Up to this point, what has been your most challenging negotiation experience?

(3) Imagine that this is the last day of class and complete this statement: This was a great class because...

Look forward to meeting you soon!

Attendance Policy: Because negotiation exercises are critical to the learning process in this course, students are expected to participate in all of them. If you must miss an exercise, it is your responsibility to contact me at least three days before the class session, and if required, to find and coach a substitute for the exercise. You may miss one negotiation exercise without penalty if you provide me with notice. Failure to contact me or to find a substitute will result in a drop of one letter grade for the course. Furthermore, failure to participate in more than one exercise (regardless of notice) will result in a drop of one letter grade for the course. All negotiation classes at Kellogg have an attendance policy that is strictly enforced.

This strict policy is necessary because your classmates rely on your attendance for their educational experience, and because instructors must arrange logistics and pairings in advance.
