| FIRST ASSIGNMENT: SESSION 1, Tuesday, June 21: (a) Course Introduction; (b) Supply and demand Please read and come prepared to ask any questions about: 1. “MECN 430 Summer Quarter 2005 Syllabus” 2. “MECN 430 Grading Components and Guidelines: Summer 2005” After a brief introduction to the course, we will turn our attention to our cases for the day: “The Aluminum Industry in 1994” and “Alusaf’s Hillside Project.” The aluminum industry provides a rich venue for studying the economic fundamentals that drive prices in a perfectly competitive market. It will also serve as a valuable vehicle for exploring the microeconomics of cost, demand, and supply. We will devote three class sessions (each week is divided into two sessions) to the case. For the first week’s class, we will cover sessions one and two: Please read: 1. Besanko, D., and R. Braeutigam, Intermediate Microeconomics: An Integrated Approach (Hereafter B&B), Chapter 2, Section 2.1. 2. McTeer, Jr., R.D., “The Dismal Science? Hardly!” Wall Street Journal (June 4, 2003). 3. The Aluminum Industry in 1994 (HBS 9-799-129) 4.
Aluminum Smelting in 5. (background reading: please read to refresh your preparation in math) B&B, Mathematical Appendix, Sections A1-A5 only. Please come to class prepared to discuss the following questions: 1. How attractive are the market economics of the primary aluminum production industry? 2. In 1994, aluminum prices have reached an all-time low in real terms. Have we reached the bottom of the market, or do you expect prices to fall even further? 3. In light of market economics and current price conditions, is Alusaf justified in spending nearly 2 billion dollars to build a new aluminum smelter? |
