SECTION:61, 62

COURSE NAME: Finance II

INSTRUCTOR:  Andrea Eisfeldt

CASEPACK (YES or NO?) :  Yes

Mandatory first class: First class is NOT MANDATORY

FIRST ASSIGNMENT: The course outline is in the course packet. Alternatively, you can get a copy off the web page (see below). To prepare for the first class, you should read the outline for Lecture 1 and Lecture 2. For subsequent classes, you should read the appropriate lecture outline prior to coming to class.

You should also remember to bring your name plate to the first and subsequent classes. I allow laptop use during class by advance permission only (see me the first day of class), except for days when we will discuss cases in class.

At the start of the first class, I will provide you with an overview of the course. Then we will cover the material in Lecture 1 and begin Lecture 2. In Lecture 1, we will discuss what is meant by market efficiency, and why this matters for firms’ financial decisions. In Lecture 2, we will review the basic elements involved in determining the correct discount rate for NPV based capital budgeting. This will in part be a review from Fin I. You may want to review your Fin I notes on the CAPM if you need a refresher. It is important to preview the outline for the lectures carefully prior to class. We will typically cover one lecture per class.

As background for the first class, you should also read Chapter 14 of Brealey, Myers, and Allen Principles of Corporate Finance (9th Edition). If you have the 8th Edition, you can use that by borrowing a friends 9th Edition and doing the page/chapter translations.

The web page will be used as the primary mechanism for distributing documents and news. The address of the course web page is:

INSTRUCTOR: Professor Brian Melzer

CASEPACK (YES or NO?) : Yes

FIRST ASSIGNMENT: Prior to the first class, you should:

  • Review the syllabus.
  • Complete the required reading for the first class (Lecture 1):
  • Read the outline for Lecture 1, which is included in the course packet. For this and subsequent classes, it is important to read the appropriate lecture outline prior to class.
  • Read Chapter 14 from Brealey, Myers, and Allen, Principles of Corporate Finance.
  • Read the set of Wall Street Journal articles entitled “Are Markets Efficient?” These and other articles are available through the electronic syllabus on the course web page.
  • Familiarize yourself with the course web page, which is administered through Blackboard:

http://courses.northwestern.edu/
The web page will be a source of up to date information about this course and a source for files needed to complete some of the course assignments. Familiarize yourself with what information is here and how to access it – before you need it – so that you don't end up doing more work than necessary.

  • Make sure that you have VPN installed on your computer and that you know how to use it. If you are not physically on campus, you will need to VPN into the Kellogg network in order to complete Homework Assignment 3. Instructions for installing, configuring, and then connecting to VPN are available from KIS.
  • Bring your name plate to class.

You will find that this class proceeds at a very rapid pace. If you are not prepared, you may become lost quickly. The first assignment is due during the second week of the course; see the syllabus and course calendar for details. I recommend that you bring the appropriate lecture outlines to the first and subsequent classes
At the start of the first class, I will provide an overview of the course. In Lecture 1, we will discuss what is meant by an efficient market and why this matters – or does not matter – to the financial decision maker of a firm. You should be prepared to contribute to this discussion.
