Nordstrom: Dissension in the Ranks (A)

Discussion Questions --- Please come prepared to discuss the following questions.

1. What are the pros and cons of being a ``Nordie?''

2. Would you want to work for Nordstrom? Do you think your former or summer employer would want to hire a ``Nordie?''

3. Referring to Example 2 on page 6 of the case, produce two graphs. On the first graph, plot hours on the x-axis and dollars on the y-axis. Show how the employee's take home pay varies as hours reported goes from 30 to 50. For the second graph, plot hours reported (x-axis) vs. sales-per-hour. How does SPH move as hours reported varies from 30 to 50? Can a Nordie increase his or her take home pay by under-reporting hours? If not, then why do the Nordies under-report?

FIRST ASSIGNMENT

Entrepreneurship 462 Fall 2005

ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND NEW VENTURE FORMULATION
OPERATION JUMP-START

"It’s important to form groups and discuss projects before the quarter begins.  Even though the professor warns …. you only begin to realize how much work it takes to write a business plan at about week 8 … it provides an important (if painful at times) dose of reality."

                                                                 "Insiders Guide to Kellogg Courses"

                                                                             Written For and By Students

Students often report that Entrep 462 was one of the most valuable courses at Kellogg. With all of us working together, I'm confident that many of you will have a similar experience this Fall.

The key to maximum success in this course is the opportunity to write a complete Business Plan that 1) truly interests you and 2) teams you with people you respect.  However, time constraints mandate that these all-important team formations be accomplished very quickly.

For this reason:

1.    Students who cannot attend the first class cannot take the course.

      2.    Much progress on team formation and ideas must be accomplished

before the first class, following the process outlined in the Course                                                                                                                                                                                                     Mangement System (Blackboard) described below.

Each student is required to go to the

Course Management System / Communications / Discussion Boards

and follow the directions for Resumes and Team Formation.

This should be done ASAP but no later than Sept 2 and 6 .

On a personal note, I’m excited about the course

and very much look forward to seeing you soon.
