FIRST ASSIGNMENT : This course should be mandatory for every one that may ever find themselves in the role of Product Manager. Mandatory attendance for first class. Start thinking about DESIGN. What is it? What's good design? What's bad design? Is there a metric? If so...what is it? Opening questions will ask for a list of products you consider to be good design as well as those products you consider bad design. Develop a list of 5 examples of each, and in a few short sentences describe why they're on your list. I want t to hear descriptors of the products. At the end of the first session be prepared to turn them in. There is no correct answer. Additionally read the following articles and chapters. This is a short course and we need to get up to speed as swiftly as possible. ARTICLES: The $70 million toothbrush; Targeting Design: Business Week's Bruce Nussbaum on Design; A Decade of Design. CHAPTERS: Effective Product Design and Development by Steven Rosenthal, Boston University, Chapters 1 & 2 and The PDMA Handbook of New Product Development 1.1 - 1.5; 2.1 - 2.9; 3.1 - 3.10. |

Visit a local supermarket or mass merchandiser (Jewel, Dominicks, Wal-Wart, etc.) and purchase a "packaged" product that you, as the product manager for the product-a cereal package, soap, salad dressing, floor cleaner, etc. Try to select a mainline national brand that most of the class would be familiar with. Prepare a typewritten list of five Design Communications Objectives you would give to your package design consultant when asking them to redesign the package. Your objectives should be "strategic" (e.g. communicate a younger, female image; contemporize the package design, etc.) as opposed to "tactical" (e.g. use red as the main color; use a modern typeface, etc.). bring your selected package to class and be prepared to present and discuss your "communication Objectives" to the class. Turn-in two copies of your objectives. |
