Instructor: Barry Merkin

Casepack (yes or no?) : Yes

First Assignment: Key to maximum success is the opportunity to write a Business Plan for a strt-up that truly interests you and to team with people you respect. However, time constraints mandate that team formation be accomplished within the first week.
For this Reason:
1. Students must attend the first class.
2. Students with specific ideas should be prepared to explain their concept well and "sell" it effectively. In addition to preparing a quick (five minute maximum) presentation, visuals and handouts are encouraged.
Obviously, the earlier that work on team formation starts, the better for all concerned. With this in mind, efforts should be made to contact other students in the class to facilitate communication before the term begins.

CASE PACK( yes or no?): Yes

First Assignment: This is a real world consulting assignment. Check the door of my office, #604/inside module #600 for a list of prospective cases or ask the secretaries in the MS Dept. Whoever signs on to a case has "first dibs" on it provided that there is a team of at least three signing on to it. Otherwise, you can sign on as individuals with the possibility of aggregating to the required size before some other team does. It is possible to investigate real business situations other than those on the list and the instructor has others. If you wish to work on a case of your choice, it must be checked out in advance, the principals must "request counseling" by filling out a form, and the instructor must give his permission before the case can be used.
Also read the introduction to the syllabus in the case packet.

CASE PACK (yes or no?): Yes

First Assignment: The subject of our first session is the nature of strategic decisions for complex, multibusiness organizations. To illustrate these decisions, we will be discussing the Speer Case, which is enclosed in your case packet.
The Speer Case is one of those "classic" case studies that has been used for a number of years because the company that it profiles is still similar to many organizations today:
-mulitiple, decentralized yet related business units;
-in different stages of the product life cycle;
-assembled primarily via acquisition; and
-in the process of formal strategic planning.
The only problem with Speer is that the case is far more detailed(and therefore lengthy) than our purposes require. Ergo, I ask that you quickly read the first twelve pages to get a feel for the different divisions represented on the Task Force. The most important and interesting portions of the case are the transcript of the first Task Force meeting(page 12-18) and the memorandum from the CEO (Appendix B, pages 28-29). Please do not waste time on quantitative analysis since our discussion will emphasize the broad types of decisions that the Task Force faces rather specific action recommendations.

Course Name: Management Communication

Instructor: Martin Stoller

Casepack yes

First Assignment: One of those annoying catch phrases in law goes something like, "Failure to read the rules does not exempt one from their immutable wrath." So here's the rule: You MUST make a good faith effort to attend the first two sessions of the course. I realize that Acts of God and the idiosyncrasies of airline schedules may OCCASIONALLY interfere, but with the kind of advanced notice that Kellogg's schedule provides, there are rarely legitimate excuses for not making it back to town on time. The first class deals with crucial course information; by the second class, we are already into our first round of projects. If you must miss a class, please make other arrangements to receive your assignment. If you miss both of the first two classes, your position will probably be given to a person on the waiting list. So stay in touch. PLEASE MAKE SURE TO HAVE READ "MOOD SWINGS IN MANAGUA" AND "THE DECLINE OF ORATORY" IN THE CASE PACKET PRIOR TO THE FIRST CLASS. Thank you.
