Resume Tips

Resume Overview

Definition: A focused sketch that highlights the key points of your life that relate to your objective.

Purpose:

  • To be read. (Some resumes are never even read, they're just discarded.)
  • To elicit an interview.
  • To clearly and concisely outline qualifications.
  • To define the direction you want your career to take.

Points to Remember for an Effective Resume:

  • One page.
  • Laser-printed on white 8-1/2" x 11" paper.
  • Reads in reverse chronological order. Current experience first.
  • Makes sense: dates must flow, career progression should be logically displayed.
  • Visually powerful: Reader's eye should catch most salient points immediately, prompting the reader to continue.
  • Has impact: Emphasizes critical facts. It shows not just what you did but what you accomplished. RESULTS: "How did you make a difference?"
  • Displays the whole person: Unique personal qualities; traits that support career direction; experiences that contributed to personal development.
  • Is not distracting or attention-getting through gimmicks, pictures, graphic design.
