What is the registration cost to the student?
The program will be free for accepted students. The cost is supported by The Graduate School.
Who is the faculty for this program?
This certificate program will be taught by the Kellogg School faculty. Sangeeta Vohra, academic director of the program has worked closely with senior faculty and deans to develop the design and content of the program.
Who is eligible for this program?
The program is open to post-candidacy doctoral students from Feinberg, McCormick, Weinberg and School of Communication.
May I apply to this certificate program if I am not currently a Northwestern University student?
Only Northwestern doctoral students are eligible to apply for this certificate offering. We do not accept applications from other Ph.D. students. However, if you want, you can apply to our open enrollment program Business for Scientists that is offered every year in April.
When is the deadline for the certificate program?
The program is offered over eight weeks during the summer quarter. Classes will meet every Monday in Jacobs center, starting June 24. Applications are due by May 1, 2013 and decisions will be made by May 20, 2013.
What is the criterion for admission?
Interested students will need to submit an online application along with a short essay (200-300 words) as to why they would like to enroll in the program. They will need to submit their CV and a letter of recommendation from their supervisor/adviser. The transcripts will also be taken into consideration.
Can I apply if I am still taking my regular Ph.D. course work?
Only those doctoral students who are finished with their coursework and qualifying exams will be eligible.
How many students will be accepted to the program?
Fifty students will be accepted each year.
How competitive is the admission process?
Students with an excellent academic and research track record are encouraged to apply. We will review every applicant’s completed application along with the application essay, recommendation letter, CV and transcript.
Is the certificate equivalent of an MBA degree?
The certificate program is designed to introduce doctoral students in science, engineering and medicine to basic business skills and is a very condensed version of our MBA curriculum. It cannot replace an MBA degree. On average Kellogg MBA students have five years of work experience and take a series of similar management and leadership courses (30 hours each).
