TOMAS MALAGA is chief economist at Itaú Private Bank International, based in New York. Itaú Private Bank specializes in global asset management for high-net-worth individuals.

Until recently, he served as economic research director at Febraban and as counselor of foreign trade affairs at FIESP, the Industrial Association of São Paulo. His past experience includes positions as chief economist at Banco Itaú in São Paulo; chief credit officer at GE Capital Brasil, Consumer Finance; chief economist at Unibanco; economist at the Central Bank of Peru; and associate professor of economics at Fundação Getúlio Vargas in São Paulo.

Mr. Málaga received a B.A. in economics from Catholic University of Peru and an M.A. and a Ph.D. in economics from the University of California, Los Angeles, where he received an OAS scholarship. He also was the recipient of Mario Henrique Simonsen Prize 2001 for Best Article at Revista Brasileira de Economia."
