Kellogg alumni team takes first place in Portofino Sailing Regatta

Two Kellogg School boats successfully competed in the first major MBA regatta since the Kellogg Alumni Sailing Club (KASC) was founded this summer. The regatta, organized by top Italian business school SDA Bocconi and the prestigious Mediterranean Yacht Club Italiano, was held Sept. 21-24 in Santa Margherita Ligure, located next to beautiful Portofino in Italy. Sponsors included Rolex, BMW, Morgan Stanley, Samsonite, Pirelli and SIAD.

Fifty boats from many leading MBA programs, including Wharton, Columbia, New York University, Stern, Insead, London Business School, Rotterdam, HEC and SDA Bocconi, competed in two divisions — racing and cruising. Kellogg and Kellogg-WHU students and alumni representing nine different countries sailed the "Sunrise," skippered by Nikola Deskovic, and placed first among 30 competitors in the cruising division. They also sailed the "Brontolo," skippered by Ricardo Soto '04, and placed eighth from among 19 in the racing division. The two diverse teams, whose ages ranged from 27 to 65, showed that passion, technical expertise, hard work and — above all — teamwork are key to success. The competition had wide press coverage in the business and sports sections of The Wall Street Journal Europe, key Italian newspapers and "The Sailing Channel."

The sailing competition was accompanied by networking events, such as a dock party, a business conference and a formal award ceremony. Top speakers included San Paolo IMI Bank CEO Alfonso Lozzo, Salvatore Ferragamo and Nautor's Swan International CEO Leonardo Ferragamo, and Vice President and Managing Director for SC Johnson Wax (S.E. Europe) Luca Mignini '04. The conference took place at the Cervara Abbey with a spectacular view of the sea. All 400 sailors and guests closed the weekend with dinner and dancing until sunrise.

The KASC is already preparing for the 2007 European racing season, which starts in May, with a regatta organized by London Business School in Athens, Greece. Given the strong interest in KASC, co-chairs Ricardo Soto and Michael Aingorn '04 plan to continue sending at least two boats to each race, keeping the Kellogg flag flying high in the MBA racing circuit. If you are interested in joining the club (no sailing experience required) please contact Ricardo or Michael to learn more details.    — Ina Speis '04
