EMP-32

Greetings to my classmates. I trust your summers are going well and that you are all rooting hard for the Cubs!

Dan Haight and Patricia Shafer send greetings from Charlotte, N.C. Dan continues in his role as vice president of sales and marketing at Bowater, while simultaneously watching innumerable self-help infomercials in preparation for his next career making bundles in real estate with no money down. Patricia is keeping very busy as president of consulting firm Compel, an organizational excellence alliance evoking courageous leaders. She is also writing chapters in two books due out in 2004 --- on women in leadership and groups going through transitions. She finds herself a student again, as she's completing an executive master's program on coaching and consulting for change, a joint venture between Oxford University and Hautes Etudes Commerciales in Paris. It sounds exhausting!

Hugh Hamill wrote to let me know he founded Nuage Jewelers with a partner late last year. Hugh offers a complete jewelry service, including repairs, appraisals, redesigning of estate jewelry, premium watches and much more. Go visit him soon! Hugh also let me know he had recently spoken to several classmates, including John McDevitt, who is back in Chicago working at Klein Tools with Chris Hargan; Paula Currie, who is now CFO of the Daily News in Virginia; and Cathy Nowinski, who continues to prosper with her writing and cooking school in Las Vegas.

Congratulations to Pat Balthrop, who was recently named chief executive officer of Luminex Corp. Per the company press release: "Pat's hiring is a great event for our company. We are extremely pleased to hire a chief executive with Pat's industry knowledge and leadership abilities. Hiring someone of Pat's talents is reflective of the bright future ahead for Luminex." Pat also recently sold his Lake Bluff home and bought a brownstone in Lincoln Park. When's the party?

  EMP-32's Tim Smithe
EMP-32's Tim Smithe in one of his famous commercials

I spoke with Tim Smithe and am happy to report that Walter E. Smithe Furniture has partnered with Drexel Heritage. They have just opened Chicagoland's first Drexel Heritage store, with plans to open an additional five stores in the near future. Tim, we all love the commercials --- keep them coming!

Another Tim --- Tim Angst --- wrote to tell me he began a new job a few months back with Kana Software as EVP of worldwide operations. Tim has global responsibility for sales, customer service and alliances. KANA software provides enterprise applications for service resolution management, enabling companies to consistently resolve customer issues regardless of interaction channel. Congratulations, Tim!

And last, but not least, I am happy to report that our very own Larry Miller FINALLY tied the knot! Larry was married late last year in Maui. It's about time!

Please continue to keep in touch and send pictures! This article is so boring unless I have input from all of you guys and pictures to go with the words! One final plea: Anyone interested in organizing the golf outing for this fall? We need one! Have a great summer.
