Dan Turnquist went directly into the State Department Foreign Service after graduation. During 35 years he served in Guadalajara, Guatemala, Managua, Caracas, Stockholm, Paris, Brussels (mission to the European Union), Bonn and London. He also spent a year at Harvard and spent his last three years as diplomat in residence at the University of Michigan with a focus on Labor and Social Affairs. He retired in 2001 and he and his wife Carolina split the year between Centennial, Wyoming, and Guadalajara, Mexico.
