IBM has identified and fixed a problem with battery charging on the IBM ThinkPad T41. If your laptop will not charge the battery, your laptop may have this problem. The fix from IBM requires an update to the laptop's BIOS and embedded controller. If you don't know what those are, don't worry -- KIS will update the laptop for you.
If you can't bring your laptop in right away, there is a short term fix: shut down your computer completely (do not suspend), remove the battery, then re-insert it and power the computer back on. Before removing the battery, make sure that the battery is "unlocked." Move the lever below the battery to the unlocked position (symbolized by the open padlock), then move the lever to the right of the battery to the unlocked position and pull out the battery. After replacing the battery, return the lever below the battery to the locked position and start up your laptop.
Some students and faculty have had problems displaying video on an external monitor or projector, specifically DVD video or MPEG video. Reinstalling the video driver will correct the problem. Click here to download the video driver and, when prompted, select Open to reinstall the driver. Click Setup to begin the driver installation. You will need to reboot once the driver installation is complete. If you continue having trouble displaying video on an external monitor or projector, please see your technical support representative: students | faculty/staff.
KIS is aware of three issues concerning wireless network access on the ThinkPad T40: No wireless connection available If you're unable to connect to Kellogg's wireless network, try manually setting the network name. Click the Start button, select Connect To, then right-click Wireless Connection. Select View Available Networks. Click the Advanced button. Under Preferred Networks, click Add. Enter ksm in the Network name (SSID) field and click OK, then click OK again. As long as you're within range of a wireless access point, you should connect to the network within 5-10 seconds. If you are still unable to access the wireless network, please bring your laptop to the Technical Support Center (TSC) in 163 Jacobs. Windows warns that network is not secure The first time you connect to the Kellogg network, you may get a warning stating "This wireless network is not secure." Kellogg and Northwestern rely on the Northwestern VPN to provide encryption and security to wireless users. To prevent anyone from eavesdropping on your wireless network traffic, connect to the Northwestern VPN server while using wireless. To connect to VPN, just click the Start button, select Connect To, and select NU VPN. If you don't have this session pre-configured, please see our VPN Docuementation.
If you're using Outlook to send attachments and get complaints from recipients that they can't open the attachments, you'll need to change a setting in Outlook. To send mail from Outlook to other mail clients, you must have the message format set to either HTML or plain text. If you send mail in Rich Text (RTF) format, other mail clients, including Eudora, will not be able to read any attachments to the message. Instructions for this configuration change are available here.
Sometimes Windows crashes so badly that the only way to reboot the computer is to turn it off. You'll need to hold the power button down for 5-10 seconds before the computer will power down. You can then turn the computer back on by pressing the power button again. Your computer may need to check the hard disk for errors as it restarts, in which case it will take a few minutes longer than usual for your computer to boot up.
There is a known problem with checking the "Remember my password" box when visiting web sites that results in the password not being stored in Internet Explorer. Kellogg Information Systems will apply the password fix for you in the Technical Support Center. Please allow 10 minutes for the fix to be applied. |
