Summary of Student Computing at Kellogg
This is a summary of the student computing environment, intended to facilitate the faculty's use of computing for instruction. Topics include Student Computer Accounts, Student Laptop Computers, Software for Student Computers, and Software Training for Students.
Student Computer Accounts:
Accounts: All students (Day, TMP, EMP) have a Kellogg/NU NetID computer account and email address.
Emailing Your Students: You may use the Student Class Lists tool to create a mass email list for all the students in your Day and TMP classes. You may contact the EMP Office to obtain a mass email list for all the students in your EMP classes. You may use the NU Ph directory to find the email address for any individual student (Day, TMP, EMP).
Setting Security on Your Faculty Web Page: Kellogg/NU computer accounts control security on the Kellogg web. Based on Kellogg policy, your faculty bio should be open to public access and your course web pages may be open to public access or restricted to any subset of the Kellogg faculty, staff, students, and alumni at your discretion. See our How-To documentation on Setting File Permissions to learn how to change access to your course web pages.
Student Laptop Computers:
Day and EMP: Students are required to purchase a standard Kellogg laptop computer package, preloaded with Kellogg’s standard software and fully supported by KIS. The Fall 2003 laptop is an IBM ThinkPad T40, while the Fall 2002 laptop was an IBM ThinkPad T23. Students with substantial technical expertise may have opted to use another equivalent laptop which they must fully support on their own. You can assume that all of these students have a laptop for use in the classroom
TMP: Students are required to have either a laptop or a desktop computer. These students have not been offered the standard Kellogg laptop package due to differences in length of enrollment at Kellogg, dispersed home/work geographic locations, and availability of local employer computing support.
Software for Student Computers:
Kellogg Laptop Package Software: Laptops have a pre-installed software image, including a current version of Windows XP Professional, MS Office XP Professional (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Access), MS Outlook, MS Internet Explorer, Netscape Communicator, Dreamweaver, and Adobe Acrobat Reader.
Required Kellogg Software for TMP Students: All students should be using a current version of Windows, MS Office, Outlook, Internet Explorer, and Adobe Acrobat Reader.
Software Training for Students:
Students in all degree programs have been informed that they need to be proficient with Kellogg network applications (Outlook, Internet Explorer) and the MS Office productivity applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Day Program: A one-day TEKcamp is offered just before fall quarter for entering day students. The software topics include: Navigating Technology at Kellogg and Intermediate/Advanced Excel. Professor Sunil Chopra is the faculty director of TEKcamp. During the academic year, there are periodic TEKclasses on selected software applications and database tools. If you would like to discuss arranging for a TEKclass to be offered in coordination with your course schedule, please contact Lida Miller, lida@kellogg.northwestern.edu.
EMP: A session on Navigating Technology at Kellogg, focusing on email and the web, is required for all entering students. In addition, a beginning or intermediate Excel class is offered for all entering students. We assume that these students have an opportunity to learn MS Office applications through their employer or on their own.
TMP: A session on Navigating Technology at Kellogg, focusing on
email and the web, is required for all entering students. During the academic
year, there are also TMP
TEKclasses on selected topics. We assume that these students
have an opportunity to learn MS Office applications through their employer
or on their own.
